i've seen brackets/metal holders that are connecting the exhaust pipes to the gearbox to support the exhaust, like in the picture below, which is from an 323i.
i have a 328i and my exhaust has kind of a bracket around where the one of the 323i would be but mine isn't connected to the transmission.
do 328i also have this bracket, like the 323i do and mine has somehow broken or is it a different situation on the 328i ?
i also don't have the "round" metal part connected to the transmission that the bracket is bolted to.

328i and obd2 m3s did not have that bracket. obd1 e36s had them 92-95 cars (plus the 323's I guess).
My European (French originally) 1997 323i definitely has this. I left it on when I replaced the (single pipe after CAT) stock 320i/323i exhaust with a dual pipe stock 328i exhaust. Details here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=18_0189 .
I think all European M50/M52/S50 models had this bracket (check complete list here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...235&series=E36 ). .. As the exhaust is quite heavy, it seems good to have, to unload some of the weight burden from the engine. It seems that in the US the situation is different (check here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=18_0253 ), and it hangs only on the bolts of the exhaust manifold and the rear muffler brackets.. Don't know why?
Update: The US 328i exhaust (identical to US S52 exhaust) is different from the European 328i exhaust.. The European ones don't have the rear oxygen sensor holes in it, and perhaps there are some other changes, but I can't really imagine them being any lighter than their European counterparts.

My '97 328i doesn't have it. I thought it was missing....somewhere in the Ether, I should reach up and grab it.
