One Of Those threads - shop made tools

...where you mystify with your shop made tools.

    ******
I just finished up making one of these

for removing/installing press fit pins. Ford

    ******
    ...and one of these.

Engine lifing bracket, because of limited overhead. Ford.

    *******
    You've certainly seen this before.

The jig, for fabricating door handle pivots. BMW.

    *******
Sure it may look like a garage door spring bracket

But its really a differential hold down bracket

    for measuring breakaway torque. BMW.

    *******
    Yes you can buy one

But you could also make your own

To immobilize the crank during J-bolt removal. BMW.
Note, the store bought one goes on the front, a better method.

    *******
    Huh?

    A dip stick knocker inner,
because the tube was a press fit into the block. MBZ.

    *******
Suppose you want to make one of these, to upgrade your Nubian T-14,

You might have to make one of these first

A 3-bolt chuck to a 4-bolt rotary table, mounted sideways on one of those.

    ******
    And speaking of one those...

Provides some elevation because the horizontal mill head doesn't go down to zero.

Careful, you might get too creative, start combining in dangerous ways.

    *******
This happens when you get really picky

CIS fuel injectors, precisely metered by a micrometer plunging a plunger, yet imprecisely filling up the graduated cylinders. MBZ.

    ******

Some assembly required, a transmission scissor lift, wheels not shown.

    ****
    Dang, forgot about these two

    from the Koni retrofit thread

Hyper your mind is without a doubt an ingenious place. But the incestuous combining of machinery tells me it is also a frightening place. Well done my friend, well done.

I'd say you have too much time on your hands but I have a feeling that would be wrong.

Nice tools we all should have access to. Never know when we may be in need of such ingenious tools.

This One of Those thread is a shop made derivative of a "What's in your toolbox?" theme.
I was about to post this as a "how to" to an existing tool thread way over there on my MBZ forum,
but then ran across a confession or two revealing that "certain elements" liked to hang around garages and lurk at tools.

I had not considered tools as entertainment, rather utilitarian.
Back here on BF I recall garage & lift threads, but not a dedicated tool thread. (Didn't search for one either.)
So BF got the job and I cranked up the dry wit a notch.

    ****
Someday I'll have to do a hydraulic ops thread, after I get the tranny scissor lift working.
Meanwhile the pin press holder from post 1, requiring 1->2 tons out of the 10 that have.

and the engine crane from the Up Before Six thread, M62B46 on the hook.

    ****
    Note above, the engine cart.
Have several, shop made per each engine app.
Essential for repacking storage at the end of the shift.

Similar below, a wheel dolly, to spin cars in place or to pack a car into storage along side the engine inventory.
Dollies could be shop made but this one (of four) is probably HF.

{Ed: Nope not HF. By Pentagon, a premium design with ball-bearing axles.
    This is essential when you're on typically oiled concrete wondering how you're going to get enough traction for the push.}

    *****
Sure you can buy one of these...

...but can you get it delivered in one hour on a Sunday evening?,
while you're bleeding your slave clutch hidden way up there along the tranny tunnel?

Note: a crow's foot is required rather than a deep socket because, not shown, a bleed tube hangs off the end, preventing air from re-entering the nipple.

    ***
I guess these goes with the pic up at the top.
Fairly embarrassing, that weld on the center muffler locating post.

    This is literally...

My favorite thread on this whole damn forum, besides the data dumps.

Mods: please add a sticky to this & add description to the title, so its easier to find.

Is that paint or some hi-tech coating on the resonator/mufflers?

    Yesterday in the shop...

Crankshaft immobilized correctly, at the harmonic balancer rather than at the rear flange. Ford V-6 build.
Design decision: I could have left off the pads and bored the center hole larger, to clear a proud hub.

The dual use tool is then flipped over, repositioned, and the water pump immobilized.

Fyi, it took several hours and 20 attempts to iterate the design so that the fan could be installed AND the tool retrieved from a tight gap afterwards.
After a final successful retrieval, the tool went into storage, never to be used again.
No, I'm not going into a tool biz, so the time suck stops here.

    Re: muffler paint
Rattle can, high-temp. VHT brand SP405 Black Pearl.
    One of my no-brainer, go-to coatings. Good for 650 degr F, 343C.
The silver on the cart and others is VHT SP127 Univ Aluminum. Good for 550F/288C.

Like the cart(s) and other steel tools, the immobilizer got hit with paint to prevent rust, then put away.

    Sometimes you just get lucky.

Was attempting a change of tranny filter & fluid on one of those dipstick-less trannys, knowing there could be "issues" getting fluid back in.
Sure enough, the filler port is way up in the tunnel with little clearance.
The tube on my pump couldn't make the turn.
And even if it were so, I'd be in for a fluid bath.

Measured the threads and said, you know, what I really need is a M14-1.5 banjo fitting, maybe perhaps going off to some AN threads.
After pondering a bit, I then walked over to another dormant tranny project where years ago I'd installed a M14-1.5 banjo, for about the same reason.
Also on my desk, not kidding, a hose exactly the right length, with an AN fitting already attached that exactly matched the banjo fitting, and the hose exactly sized to the nipple on my injection gun.

Not shown, a bucket to receive a small amount of back flow as I was gone to refilled the half-liter injection gun, ten times.

We've all been warned that this day would come, eventually.
Not only are they replicating, they're as arrogant as hell, running roughshod over the few humans left.
I'm writing this from the confines of my corner office.
    The door is locked.
