My 1993 850ci has a check engine light on and i bought the round obd adapter but every time i go to have it scanned the scanner wont connect to the car. Its idling around 500 rpm and smells a little rich running. Throttle responce is poor and takes time for it to even reach 40 mph. Anyone know what could be going on? Ive been told it might be one of the vein air sensors but im a 17 year old body technician so im not the best with engines
Try a stomp test to see if you can get some codes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V30TVY-Ltg
P.S. 17 years old? Congrats for diving into the deep end.

you can do a stomp test for a start, see here https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...e-pedal-faults
All 1989–94 BMW vehicles equipped with a self diagnostic system have the ability to retrieve engine fault codes by counting MIL flashes. These are four-digit fault codes (pedal faults) and have different code numbers than those retrieved by the scan tool. Pedal fault codes can be retrieved with the ignition on, engine off, and with the gas pedal rapidly depressed to the floor five times without interruption.
V12 engines have two ECMs, one for each engine bank. Codes need to be retrieved from each bank separately. The left engine bank is on the driver's side of the vehicle, which is Bank 2. The right passenger side is Bank 1. Be aware that each bank's induction system (MAF sensor and intake runners) are physically located on the opposite bank. To access the second ECM, depress the gas pedal to the floor six times. All cylinder 7–12 codes begin with a two.
Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
If your scanner is like mine, it may only talk to the car when the engine is running... if its an OBD II scanner it won't work right. Has to be an OBD 1
