    Evaporative Purge Valve Question

Can the two lines leading two/from the canister be capped off? Or would this cause problems?

My understanding from the thread below is that the system's only purpose is to purge excess fuel vapors for emissions purposes. It seems to me that the easiest way to 'fix' a faulty purge valve is to just plug the lines and call it a day. This would solve any vacuum leaks caused by the valve being stuck open at idle, right? (assuming the vacuum hose from canister -> valve -> manifold is not cracked)

Is that allowed where you live? Here I would not passs the roadworthy test and would not get a sticker for the next 2 years.
Theoretically I assume it would be possible, but the lines towards the tank should be open, or you should drill a hole in the fuel tank cap, that the gas tank can breathe. On the E38 there were tank problems that the tank collapsed due to high vacuum inside the tank when the fuel level went down.

Not a problem here - it's considered an antique once 30 years old, and subjected to much less strict inspections. Currently the last inspection sticker is from the PO in 2006... I need to fix some more basic things like the windshield wipers and windows before I can get it inspected in MA.

Its a pretty vital system actually, I would clean the valves and make sure they work. Otherwise you may end up with a car that smells of fuel, badly.

If you still have a charcoal canister you should be fine to bypass it as I believe it vents to that .so just block your vac source and run both lines with the canister . I had this system in my gf’s e30 and I removed, I have no charcoal canister either. Most early bmws didn’t have the system they just had a vent tank in the rear fender well

The charcoal filter is in place, so I may just plug the line leading to the manifold. I noticed disconnecting the valve doesn't cause a check engine light or any faults, so that's all that really matters for my state inspection. I'll just leave the hose from the fuel tank attached to the canister.

Does anyone know where the hose (from engine side of the valve) goes into the manifold? I felt around under there when I replaced the two small vaccum lines, but couldn't locate another inlet nipple
