It may be the fan/blower in the automatic climate control (IHKA in BMWspeak). The fan blows interior air across a sensor so that the IHKA know the interior’s temperature.

Yup, that’s the IHKA. Try some loooow pressure compressed air. The best thing is to buy a can of compressed air at an ekectrix store. Try amazon. However, the fan itself may be toast. Plug the IHKA back in and turn the ignition to “on” but with the engine off. Put an ear to one if the vents to hear the fan. If there’s no noise your best bet is to buy a used (pre-owned!) IHKA from the same year as your car.

I have pulled them out of E-39's and taken them apart. The fan area would be full of dust bunnies, and such. A bit of cleaning, and it would work just fine again.

Darin, how hard is it to take the IHKA apart? Is it assembled with screws or plastic tabs?

Some tabs and IIRC torx screws.
