Looking to get a radio for my e36. I’m looking for something cheap and quick to install. Also I need it to fit well. If it matches it the car that’ll be a plus one as well for me. Any suggestions?
Its a conventional single-din size radio. The difficult part is finding one that has matching colors to the e36 dash lights, lots of aftermarket headunits have funky bright blue lighting and such. Older Blaupunkt headunits look really simple and some have a close matching amber illumination.
BMW Business CD43.
Search eBay, most of the units are from Rover Group vehicles, though they where factory fitment in Z3s.

No, not at all. There are a lot out there but the newer stuff sometimes doesn't flow well with the simplistic e36 interior. But its all subjective.
Some headunits come with the ability to change their backlighting. I got a Pioneer DEH-S5000BT and there's an amber option for the backlighting color. Although the design won't be as simple as the Blaupunkt above, at the very least the colors match very close.
I have a Sony MEX-N5100BT which I like. All the modern stuff, Bluetooth calling is amazing with a stick. Fully customizable colors. Instructions from crutchfield were spot on.
I have pictures somewhere I can dig up

You could get a Grom Audio unit ( https://gromaudio.com/ ) and run the Aux cable to the cabin if you're just needing an aux cable. I've got mine setup with Bluetooth and will be doing a short writeup soon.

Sorry .............. the picture failed the first time. Sexy = looks like made in 1999?
VDO is a big name but the radios are not sold "commonly" in the USA. Thus I also see no one has made a review

The sexiest radio has always been de Professional RDS, but these are anything but cheap nowadays and only have th EU FM band frequencies.

Aren't the FM frequencies compatible, going from Europe to the U.S. – tuning in 50khz steps in Europe vs. 200 khz in North America? The problem I remember is that AM (medium wave) tunes in 9 vs. 10 khz steps, respectively. Which is possibly now of historical interest, as there is little to no AM in Germany to receive after all the broadcasters shut down!
Does the Professional RDS also receive longwave and the 49m shortwave bands, like the Business RDS?

I got a Blaupunkt Austin 440, $140. Flip out with bluetooth, hands free, DVD and backup camera capable. The illumination colors are adjustable to match pretty closely.
You will need to run new wiring and will probably want to upgrade the rear to 6x9's. As long as you don't care about being period correct it will do the job. I also got a powered Blaupunkt sub unit.
The unit in my car.

Ive longed for a proper CD43 Unit, or the Professional RDS. I believe that you can get the Range Rover RDS in the US and it is the same Crap (Seller usually puts BMW Sticker over the Range Logo). You can even still get the NAV CD's.
But MY CD33 is on the way out. Ive already Fixed resistor 181 (?) to fix the Dim Back Light, But now it is shorting out every major-ish bump and is becoming extremely annoying. with this in mind, kind of keeps me from forking out some $$$ for a proper RDS or CD43. Why buy another 20 yr old radio?
Like most the clash between modern era radio's and interior of the E36 has kept me away from buying anything current, But I do like the Model nannie posted.
My criteria was purely features and adjustable colors. The style doesn't really match, but at least doesn't clash, and color is pretty spot on.
Bluetooth music, Bluetooth phone calls, tap the volume knob to bring up Google Assistant. Also noticed an audio quality increase over whatever the PO had in there.
