stupid question of the day: why can't i find 255/35 or 265/35 tire size for 8.5x17" wheel?

Most E36 guys who run 255's run 255/40's. The lower profile sizes aren't common because they aren't standard equipment for much of anything. That said, you probably shouldn't be putting 255's on a wheel narrower than 9 inches, and you probably need at least 9.5 inch wheels to properly fit 265's.

because it is a ridiculous proportion, the overall height would be something close to 24"
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
so, someone who busy 10" AC Schnitzer 17" wheels for example, will basically stretch 255 or 245/40s?
The only time I ever see anything wider than 255/40 on an E36 is if there's fender flares and/or a widebody kit involved. There just isn't enough room, especially in back. 255's you can do on 17x9 wheels ET40+ wheels with a rear fender roll and a 12mm spacer in front. I opted to stick with 245's on my 17x9's because I didn't feel like rolling my fenders. They have plenty of grip on the track.

thanks man! for some reason verts seem to have plenty of space back there. i have 245s on with 20mm spacers and drop and can prob fit 265 there without issues but i dont want to increase circumference. i'll stick with 245s for now.
PS Ross - 265/35 is 24.3 just -1.6% from stock 245/40 - so not ridiculous but obv not very common size for 99% of cars fwiw.
