I have researched the infamous 99-05 3 series rear-end unit body-to-subframe body cracking issue that is said to effect all models of the 3 but with much less info I find relating for the 3 wagon. I have been hearing creaking from over the past two months and it is increasing. Recently, I inspected my rear body to subframe for any sign of cracks in the unitbody..I saw none. Without removing the subframe bushings, one cannot inspect for cracks that may be present that are under the bushings. To me, the sounds could indicate a failing rubber bushing. When after driving in the rain, this creaking almost disappears as if water is lubricating a dry rubber bushing. Has anyone a response?
The trailing arm bushing can go bad #4, the E36's have the same issue. Next will be lower and upper bushing #2/3. Raise the back end and see if you get any play out of them using a crowbar or pry bar.
