2000 E38 recent trans failsafe program has PO743error code replace battery alternator already unplugged ABS with no change.any ideas
You need to scan for BMW-codes.
What scan tool should I get BMM V2.0 from icarsoft is what I am seeing in most of the videos.
Well then, here are some options,
concerning diagnostic tools,
For a good BMW scan tool, I feel you have 3 options:
- Foxwell nt520:http://www.foxwelltool.com/search/?q=NT520
- Carly for BMW:http://www.mycarly.com/product/bmw-app/
- INPA software for BMW: Do a search on bimmerforums
I recommended them in no specific order,
as selection is based more on preference.
INPA is an excellent diagnostic tool,
but is a proprietary BMW factory tool.
So all available copies are technically bootleg versions.
This requires a copy of the INPA software downloaded into a laptop computer,
along with the correct cables for your particular model of BMW.
I recommend this only for computer geeks, or the mostly computer savvy among us.
For an affordable standalone unit, Foxwell nt510(nt520 Updated version) is the preferred unit, along with required cables.
It can scan for BMW codes, among other things, as it can communicate with all BMW modules.
Carly for BMW is an APP,
and as such, requires a smartphone,
along with a connection to the OBD2 port in your vehicle,
supplied either by cable or wireless connection via Bluetooth dongle
Update: Now the full version is $74/year on a recurring subscription

I will download Carly as I already have a Bluetooth OBD II adapter and have been using torque pro II as a generic code reader will update as we go thanks so much for the help. I love this car and get it at a steal of a price engne is strong and until now was great. Just gotta get this trans failsafe mode stuff taken care of.
Carly will not work with generic bluetooth adapters. It has to be one of their approved adapters.

Suggestion is to stop throwing random parts at it and diagnose the car correctly. It will save you lots in the long run. A cheap 7 series is often a nightmare, or at least a hassle.

- 2000 Z3: Many Mods.
- 2003 VW Jetta TDI Manual 47-50mpg
- 1999 S52 Estoril M Coupe
- 2014 328d Wagon, self-tuned, 270hp/430ft-lbs
- 2019 M2 Competition, self-tuned, 504whp
- 2016 Mini Cooper S
A 7 series at a "steal of a price"....imagine that.
Please, don't get me wrong....I believe that the E38 is the very best big car in the world, ever. Still, the reason that 7-series cars, and S-class Mercedes lose 98% of their vale is because they aren't taken care of, as they age. They're passed along to the next guy, instead of fixing them. And the next guy doesn't fix what's wrong, either.
Miky's absolutely right: you need to be able to read BMW codes from all the computers. I'd mention that you will NOT be able to do this, on your car, with something that plugs into the OBD port. You have a 20-pin diagnostic connector, underhood, and that's where you need to plug your diagnostic tool. This might or might not rule out the Carlys and Torque things.
All this said; none of us believe in OBD codes, because they're so grossly inaccurate for diagnosing BMWs. But I googled P0743, because it's all the information we have....and it says "Torque Convertor Clutch Solenoid"....so I can't imagine why you replaced the battery and very expensive alternator? Hope you got the alternator from a BMW specialist supplier, not Autozone or OReilly.
Unplugging the ABS wasn't wise, because it has nothing to do with this code, and you may not be able to clear the codes you created without plugging into the 20-pin port, using a BMW diag tool..
Sorry....

What do you know....the best BMW computer guy I know overlapped (I'm slow at typing). But note that we agreed.
You can't fix it 'til you know what's wrong. Diagnose first.

Yup. Carly needs their adapter. It will work on 20 pin cars.
So will the nt510.
I have both. In general I prefer the Foxwell.

INPA is my preference!

INPA will be my preferred tool!
I have inpa too. It has its place.
I just like not having to pull the laptop out.
