Does a new '05 X3 battery need to be registered? I replaced the battery and and it seems to be fine, but it won't start. I tried to register the battery with Carly for BMW pro, but is says it is not necessary for this model.
Help!
No registration required. Will it jump start? Any lights come on? Did you get a voltage reading?

Have not tried jumping. Lights work great, so I did not read the voltage.
Let me know when you have done them. It's the natural next steps.

OK, thanks.
No it won't jump start. The lights work well and my multi-meters confirms 12 volts.
I changed my battery yesterday and the dreaded ABS 4x4 and brake lights came on for a while and then finally went out.
That's just to say that changing batteries can cause some weird things in those cars.
However no starter indeed points more toward bad battery contacts maybe or a faulty battery itself.
I would start by checking the clamps and the posts and thoroughly cleaning them and also taking a voltmeter to the battery to see if it's charged. You can also take the battery to an AutoZone or the like and they will test it for free.
Good luck, I hope it will behave soon...

The battery is good. Can someone tell me how I can confirm the starter is bad?
Using your voltmeter, check the voltage while someone hits the starter. It could be the selinoid, or starter. If your getting voltage to the starter and the selinoid is good, then try a few light hammer taps (old school) just to make sure it's not just hung up between the sprocket inside. If no luck, then find a good indy shop and get a flatbed.

Thanks dano1200r. Any chance the link from the key fob and the car was lost, after changing battery? I saw one video where a guy bought a new key from a dealer, the dealer needed the X3 VIN#, and the new key worked but the old one did not.
IIRC, even the valet key with no electric fob should start the car. Check the fuse, but it's an old starter. A shop should be able to a diagnostic test for everything quickly for half an hour labor. Last thing you want to do is start throwing parts at it.

A bad starter will have the symptoms you describe. Try rapping the starter with something while someone tries to start it. You will probably have to access the starter from underneath. I had this problem and I smacked my starter with a 1/2" drive breaker bar and the engine started.
...and yes...I had my starter rebuilt shortly thereafter.
