Just got this e39 for a daily driver. 1999 528i. Working through some of the lighting gremlins and I'm stumped as to where the instrument lights are located in the cluster. Realoem shows 5 bulbs for my vin: BY23715. O.k., pulled the gauge cluster (low one) out and there are none showing on the back. Anyone out there know what I'm missing. I even pulled it apart and I'm not seeing the illumination/back light for night driving. The dimmer is working but there is no gauge illumiation. Are they maybe built in?
The five bulbs are spread across the bottom of the cluster. They have a special bayonet base, which, IIRC, are tan in color.
Does the headlight switch illuminate?

Can you post an image of the back of your instrument cluster? I've never owned a BMW with a low cluster...so I'm not sure if the bulbs are in the exact same position.
Plus...we have no idea of what you're seeing or what you think are supposed to be the bulbs?
{high cluster}
