It's done slowly to not stress the metal.
If you were to suspend the crank from the very ends and let it sit with the bow upwards gravity would even do the trick over time, if you've got the patience for it, but that would be a weeks long process. A shop could do it in a few days.

Interesting thought although I would be concerned that the gravity bend back wouldnít be consistent end to end to have a perfectly true crankshaft. Although it might measure true in the center...

Agreed, but the theory is sound, and it's an excellent option to have the crank straightened in such a manner. If it was more than a few thou I'd probably source a new crank, but 2thou it shouldn't pose any issues at all.

Hah! Possibly and I am admittedly typically this way.

But itís outside the specifications of BMW and Iíll be making 5x the power it was built for. Donít think Iím that crazy :p

How are you measuring the runout anyway?

Thatís a huge noodle of a crank. Iíd expect it to flex some. Stuff has to be unbelievably stuff to not flex any.

Im 1000 miles away so I can’t tell you your doing it right or wrong but I’m pretty skeptical of your measuring at this point.

    Good point..
I don't suppose you've got access to a lathe which you can suspend the crank between centres and do a runout check that way?
Post a video of your procedure if you can.

    Update:

Measured all cranks and got the best one. New bearings came in.

    Bottom end assembly happening tonight.

    Finally some progression.

Not as soon as Iíd like but it is together. Total seal rings were a bit odd in the fact that I had to use quick seat dry lube on the cylinder walls and regular assembly line on the rings themselves.

Now I have to see if I see if I can clean up the oil pump. I have some light scoring on the inside with one scratch that is pretty deep that can be felt with a fingernail.

1500 grit here we come! Hopefully most will clean up!

Anyone got any crucial tips for timing the engine from scratch? I think I read something that you want the engine like 30 degrees from TDC.

Crank at tdc. Cams in blocks. Remove intake block suck in vanos. Lock cams. Rotate over a few times and check blocks.

    Rinse and repeat.

With car in neutral, rotate crank clockwise until marks line up on hub. With socket at 12 o'clock on hub rotate motor counterclockwise until it is just outside cylinder head. This will drop all pistons. Refer to videos below. They haven't failed me yet....

Thanks for the help guys! Just need to slap the vanos in and out the timing cover on.

Ran into a bit of an issue with 2 studs I had to replace for the cam tray. Everywhere I look has them in 95mm length but mine are 100mm length.

This ends up with the studs not going all the way through the nuts...

    Any ideas?

    Well motor is in.

Now just need to wait for my charge pipes/ intercoooler/ expansion tank to ship from Jon Virgil at VI.

Also still waiting on Eric from Rallyroad to get me a kit together for my fuel system. Donít have much hope there as Iíve been waiting a month or two for that one haha he just doesnít have any time.

Prob just going to have to piece a fuel system together unfortunalty.

He was trying to create a total plug and play e85 fuel system with pre cut lines etc.

Ended up just grabbing fuel rail, dual pump hangar, fuel filter, and siphon pump.

White Pony Resurrection - My road to 1000hp

    Big updates.

Got the car together and had some major hang ups.

First was the fact that the cold side piping that I had welded the guy put the ICV Bung before the MAF so the car was idling like hell. Took me a few weeks to iron that one out.

Next the car was going insanely rich under boost which was a really tricky boost leak to find. The leak never presented itself until I put the system under pressure at 35psi then wiggled the hose that goes to the brake booster. Small leak presented itself at the brake booster side nipple.

Finally throughout all this my motor was smoking really bad and since this is my first built motor I didnít know what an appropriate level for it to burn oil was. Turns out after Boris helped me go step by step to realize there is a large amount of oil in all of the intake runners (but the intake manifold is dry). We knew it had to be rings or valve seals at that point. My bottom end was supervised by my buddy who has built countless engines and is a master tech at BMW, so Iím thinking it is valve seals. Iíll dig into it later this week when I get the tool my guess is that the machine shop totally forgot to replace valve seals.

While I like the look of the Jon Volk box there for coolant overflow and catch can, I don't like the idea that those two could ever have the possibility of cross contamination
