1994 bmw 525, auto trans 118,000 miles. Recently developed a ticking noise that appears to be coming from the transmission while in park or neutral. When you put it in gear, the noise goes away, but then can be heard while driving. It also appears to be related to engine speed and not road speed.transmission is shifting fine. Anybody have a suggestion?
Another thing I noticed. No noises when starting and the noise isn’t there when cold
Some more info:
Dropped the transmission pan and found pieces of an orange plastic ring. Anyone know what this may be?
Hardly extra parts. Definitely something wrong with transmission. Can anyone recommend a good Remanufactured unit?
Sorry im sure someone will chime in, I do remember seeing a post recently about automatic transmission failure and find some plastic ring in the pan, maybe do a quick search ?

I found pieces while replacing filter. I do have manual swap ready but my auto tranny works great and I plan to drive it for at least a year or until it breaks whichever comes first
From what i can tell, the pieces are from a spacer that is in the pump. Seems to something that is relatively common. I watched a few videos of tear downs in which these pieces were also found in the front sump
