I'm going to look at a 1996 328is on Saturday. It is a 5 speed manual with 92,000 original miles! The owner owns a BMW shop and it has been very well maintained its whole life. He is pricing it at $7500. I just want to hear some peoples opinions. Is this a fair price? Should I ask to go lower? Is it overpriced?
I wouldn't pay $7500 for a regular 3 series e36 unless it had an LS motor in it. But of course, that's my opinion.
I paid substantially less than that for my E36 M3, but granted it was not in perfect condition and had twice the mileage.
Wayyy overpriced. Kelley Blue Book is probably less than half of that. $7500 is M3 money.
he's trippin'
A stock, common as cat shit, first year 328is, for over $7k.... and you are actually interested in it? I could see 4500 being top dollar for a pristine low mile 328is....
I paid 6k+ less for a '99 328is w/ 50k more miles, and every service record since day 1.
Most I'd pay is 3k if the thing is immaculate inside and out. With the mileage even 3k is a bit much...
And yet I was offered 5k for mine when it had 190k miles and is clean but needs painted at some point due to age. If it is inspected and doesn't need anything then it wouldn't be so bad. Most people on here buy them needing 3-5k in work and say "that's way overpriced" for one that doesn't need much work.
1997 328is - Megasquirt PNP, Holset HX35, Deka 80lb injectors, SPA T3, Precision PW39 WG, Synapse Synchronic BOV, DKM Organic Twin Disc Clutch, Innovate LC-2 W/B, Mishimoto Intercooler, Mishimoto Catch Can, Mishimoto Rad, Devils Own Meth, Porsche 911 calipers with E46 M3 rotors, Corsa Exhaust
The car is worth what someone will pay for it. It will probably go for around 5k if not more. Also it completely depends on where you are in the U.S. I'm in New England and people will pay top dollar for any e36 that isn't rotted out. I drove 5 hours one way to pick up my '99 328is and still overpaid a bit. A dealer in the Boston area had a '98 328is with 49k original miles listed for 10k and it was gone in a couple weeks. I emailed them and offered $7500 and they basically told me to pound sand lol.
1998 318i m52 swap 3.38 lsd, 1995 540i/6 speed (SOLD), 1993 325i, 1999 328is m-sport, 1996 328i GT35
Sounds like a lot to me, but I'm not you. If it's really as nice as you say it is and you like it then it's up to you and your wallet
If the car is as stated, overly maintained and not needing of anything; I can see 7500 being a ok not great price. For the people that are purists and want the best condition you can find these are the prices that are out there. Especially since super clean e36 are getting harder and harder to find.

Clean e36s are increasingly hard to find. $7500 is top dollar. A few years ago top dollar would have been $4-5k for non-Ms. Your decision also depends on how far you are willing to travel outside your area if you can't find other examples in your 'hood. Also depends if you can do your own repairs.
It went along the lines of "Car price is firm, good luck on your search" no negotiation. They seemed pretty unmotivated to sell it.
I guess they proved me wrong because it was gone a week later. Maybe an insider deal? I have pictures actually of the listing i'll have to dig and find them.
Here is the state of e36 prices summed up in 1 post if you need a good chuckle https://hartford.craigslist.org/cto/...549923512.html

I wouldn't sell my 325is for 5k, and it isn't perfect. People who want these cars in clean condition will pay for them. I was offered a 2008 E90 in near perfect condition on trade and turned it down.
If anyone is hoping to find a pristine sub 100k E36 coupe for $3000, it's not going to happen. You can buy a decent running and working one for $2000 on a good day and spend 3-4k making it pretty nice, barring expensive items like new paint.
I wouldn't personally pay it, but it is all about what you want and what you are willing to pay. You could buy the car and find that it still needed work, in fact that would most likely happen.

I just bought a 1996 328 convertible with 70k, 2 owner for $4000. It is a very clean car. I only had to replace brake light circuit and blower resistor.

If anyone was wondering here's the actual ad. I ended up not getting the car.
A bit more miles than car originally posted. But pretty clean example for under 7k

Geography plays a big part in e36 value right now.
