Supposedly it can happen with attempted cranking on a dead battery. It would take the perfect voltage/current that one computer got the rolling table updated while the other crashed due to low power. We're taking nanosecond timing for that to happen.

Could a plug have come loose, or finally gotten just enough corrosion to lose continuity on a wire or something? Do you guys have any technical literature from BMW about the operation of the EWS system, similar to the stuff about the MS42/MS43?

I'd look through the electrical schematics, but without knowing the operation of the modules and their shared communications I'd be slamming my face into a wall even more than usual...

Silly kitty, of course we have the info. Here's the relevant part. While the M52TU and M54 cars have EWS-3D, the manual points you back to the 3.3 system for operation descriptions.

Probably related, there are no apparent rolling codes in the key for the Z3 systems.

The key is RFID, as it is in all BMWs of this era. The rolling codes are EWS-DME. That's why you have to stomp on such a large chunk of memory when de-marrying a DME.

I downloaded INPA and should have the cable by this weekend. What should I check for and what should I leave the hell alone...LOL. This is my first BMW and the first time running this software. I appreciate any help I can get. I fell in love with the Z3 the month that it was working, but it's been German driveway art for about 3 weeks now.

INPA can't really mess anything up.

If you used my pack, once your COM ports are set up and matching, go to:

E36, Engine, MS42 for m52 new. (If you have any language variant or version error popup, those are for your info. Simply ignore and click OK)

Then go to error menu on F4 button, and then click read.

Take a screenshot or record the resulting errors, if any.

    Then we move from there.

Take screenshot of existing errors, reset/clear the errors and do the read of errors again with screenshot. Crank, and read again. Share all results here.

Thanks, it was the EWS. I could not have done it without your help.
