Yesterday my baby started acting up. When ever I came to a stop (from any speed) the trans felt like it would free wheel as it slowed (neutral), and then as I actually stopped, it would engage and jerk hard. So hard in fact that I had to look in the rear view mirror to make sure I wasn't just rear ended. Anyone ever experience this before? What was the cause/cure?
This car is my daily driver, and I run my elementary age kids everywhere in it.
Thanks in advance.
Denny
Have you changed the fluid a filter recently?

I'm supposed to take it to him today if the problem persists. Yesterday it happened no less than 5 times in a row at separate stops. But then on the way home from picking up my daughter from Swim Club it seemed to have stopped. I have not driven the car yet today since my girls are off school today.
Does this only happen when the car is warm? When downshift from 5th to 4th does it bang? Check Engine light on?
Come to think of it....my '99 740i used to do that when I first bought it. It was absolutely horrible and I used to change the gears manually to stop it happening - IIRC it is actually the 3rd to 2nd change that is the problem, the 740i doesn't bother with 1st most of the time when coming to a stop.
Eventually the fault was traced (with the help of this Forum) to the MAF - it had come to the end of its life and the engine was just not getting the fuelling right at idle at that caused the gearbox to clout during downshifts. The recollection is rather hazy - it was 12 years ago now......

I think so.
Haven't noticed that.
CEL is on for a evap system, fog lights, etc...
And my pixles are dead in my readout. I really need to send it somewhere to have it repaired and the dials customized. But since I live in Iowa, and the most popular places to have it done are on the coasts, I've been hesitant.
I'm with Timm. I thought I had tranny problems and it turned out to be the MAF. Get an OEM MAF or you will have problems.
No codes usually - they just cause running problems....

Thank you, again.
Here's my story,

Just for S&G, I think I'll unplug the MAF and see how it runs. Thanks again.
