I did a little research that I'd like to run by the group:
On calling a BMW dealership I have found that the BMW windshield for my 94 850 CSI is in Germany and can be purchased. They tell me that the green windscreen with the band at the top is not available but the green windscreen without the band is available. My car has a band across the top. I'm going to have to take it out of the garage to look more closely at the tint or not of the windshield. At the bottom of the information printed on the windshield it says VSG tinted. I want to keep the car as original as possible. Are there any experts out there that know what was available for windshields in 94? Were there options or did they all come the same way?
Green band or no green band, get the OEM windshield and don't let the glass installer try to sell you a knockoff from China glass. They will 'warranty' it but it will not fit right.
Safelite let me compare the OEM to the after market side-by-side before installation. The after market had no pre-installed rear view mirror mount (OEM did of course) and was a quarter inch smaller in all dimensions, than the OEM, which means there's no guarantee that the gasket would have properly sealed to the body all the way around. And with a quarter inch of movement, no guarantee it would have been perfectly centered. Glad I spent the extra bucks to make the real thing happen.
Advise - if you care about your Eight, it's worth the extra money. Mine was about $936 bucks. $750 of it was the parts cost including the new gasket.
$435 about 3 years ago for just the glass at the dealer. Prices are up (if not double).
What "thumbs up" really means

When I bought new windshields about 2 years ago from BMW, the front ws was Sekurit and the rear was Pilkington. Wish both were Sekurit though.

Thanks to all of you that responded. Haven't done anything yet but inspection comes up in May so I need to get on the stick. Any additional information would still be appreciated. - Dave
