Anyone ever experienced a DME case sticker having a different VIN to the one on the rest of the car? In my case, the car VIN is stamped DE73018 on both the vehicle compliance plate (attached by local licencing authority - so NOT definitely authoritatively correct) and also on the BMW build specification paperwork stuffed under the rear seat. On the sticker attached to the metal case of the DME though, it is printed DE73010.
The differing numbers are so close that it looks like a case of reading/transcribing error in the printing. I have no reason to believe the DME has ever been replaced.
There's another difference in the long form of the VIN too.
Vehicle says: WBAGD82040DE73018
....DME says: WBAGD820X0DE73010
I can't explain this discrepancy.

maybe a misprint, you know what paint your car has, upholstery etc., here you have both VIN decoded, interesting: the 3010 had a special inspection in BMW factory/works because it was a car for type approval in Australia.

I checked the German version, because in the English version often there is the word dummy salapa, which means it was not translated , here English https://www.etkbmw.com/bmw/EN/vin/decoder/online
or BMW Australia used the DME from the type approval car and installed it in your car?
Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
Yeah my car is definitely the Calypso Red one, not the KASCHMIRBEIGE one (whatever the hell colour that is!), so my DME sticker is definitely wrong. I guess the reason why that is has been lost forever to history. Perhaps the 'type approval' status of the other one means it was a pre-production 'mule' sent out only for car shows, demonstrations and test drives but ultimately destined for destruction and not allowed to be licenced. If that was the case, then maybe the DME was salvaged for a spare part before it was crushed & ultimately found its way into my car during warranty period servicing. Will never know for sure obviously. Just a curiosity.
I do know Australia did get 'mule' demo cars out here before full scale importation of sellable versions. I drove a couple of E39 ///M5 mule cars when they very first came out in something like 1998 I think before they went on sale here. They were pre-production cars imported tax free, no customs duty paid so I was told on condition they were effectively commercial samples and had to ultimately be crushed under customs witness to ensure they were never licenced or sold for road use. They were thrashed on track days etc. for enthusiast/car club owners etc. and used as demo/display cars for a couple of months. Then crushed. Perhaps DE73010 was something similar for the E32 740iL
