Hi all,
Scott here, new owner of a 128i with a few more than 130K on the clock.
The car seems brilliant, but has a few "projects" that will be completed in the near future. First is clearing up some old error codes.
1) TPMS alert on dash - I think I have this sorted, and have enlisted the help of a tire shop pro to help me sort it out - he seems confident that this will be a reasonably easy fix and I'm happy about that. I'm a motorsports person (race motorcycles), so checking tire pressure religiously is a part of my "ethos" - I probably don't need the TPMS system, but the chiming is annoying on start-up, so I'll fix it.
2) I'm getting a "light" malfunction indication at start up. After reviewing the codes in the dash it indicates that the left rear stop lamp isn't working. I've tested it, and it's working fine. I swapped bulbs (left to right) to see if the problem would follow a bulb, and it doesn't - left rear still indicates the failure. Since there is no way to static test it I pre-emotively replaced the high brake force bulb - still get the alert. Any help that you could provide would be greatly appreciated!
3) The car came with new parts for rear brakes (rotors / pads) in the trunk and I'll be doing them soon. I've acquired a set of new front rotors and pads and will simply do all 4 at the same time - they're all looking quite worn.
4) Brake dust on the wheels- and in a serious way! I've used the typical wheel cleaner and it didn't even put a dent in this stuff. I've also tried some brake cleaner in a discrete location, as I didn't want to damage the paint or clear coat - that didn't seem to touch it either. Any tips / tricks on getting the wheels cleaned up?
Thanks all - I'm really enjoying the car so far and look forward to putting a bunch of miles on it and getting out for a few track days with it!
I look forward to conversation on this forum as well!
I'm sure we'll talk soon!
Scott
#2. Check the brake light socket for corrosion. The bmw check light system is very sensitive to light socket corrosion.
#3. What are the brands of brake parts? BMWs don’t like crappy aftermarket brake parts as they don’t last.
#4. I use regular car wash and a speedy scrubber (MR-544 Synthetic Net Speedy Scrubber. It’s available on Amazon) Wash it 3x with towels to remove any excess abrasiveness. I used these for decades on my alloys without issues
Also, put Rejex on the wheels once they are clean. I tracked my M240i at Virginia International Raceway recently. Hoses off the wheels and brake dust just flowed off the wheels. I hardly had to scrub them. Stuff is that good.
