So I'm 3 hours away from home for work and car is running fine. All of a sudden it starts to stutter, goes I to limp mode then stalls. I run the code and I have misfires an ctlanders 1 2 and 3, and exhause cam position sensor. So I assume the cam sensor went out and that caused the misfires.
Luckily an O Rielys here in Tahlequah OK had one in stock. So I went and grabbed it. Disconnected the battery, swapped out the sensor. Plugged in battery and start her up. It starts up ok and runs for a few seconds then shuts off. Run the codes and it says no codes. Try to start again and it just cranks.
Any ideas what the heck to try? I guess I could replace the could on 1 2 and 3, but for the few seconds it ran it seemed fine, not like it was on half the cylinders.
TIA
There are 2 cam sensors, did it indicate which bank?
Got fuel pressure? S/b 50 psi.
Ed in San Jose '97 540i 6 speed aspensilber over aubergine leather. Build date 3/97. Golden Gate Chapter BMW CCA Nr 62319.
Code said 0013 bank B, which according to what I found is the exhaust sensor.
The car is in a Walmart parking lot, and I have next to no tools on me.
I opened the valve on top of the fuel rail, and turned the key to on, no fuel came out, and then cranked it over and nothing came out.
Soam I correct to assume it is a fuel flow problem; relay or pump most likely. I guess there's is behind the glove box, but ha ENT seen how to get at it yet, it how to test. I'm doing everything from my phone in a parking lot, so not easy. About to go get a room for the night, and then plan my attack for tomorrow.
Thanks

This is all the codes it showed when it first happened. Like I said after the battery disconnect there are no codes showing.
I'm not sure if those jive with a fuel problem. I guess the car would start to run super lean which could cause all kinds of strange issues which these could be a part of

ok, doing more research tonight, and realized the valve on the fuel rail is a Schrader valve, so nothing should come out when pump is running unless you open it, which I didnt' do. Is it safe to just use a tire pressure gauge to test the pressure on it? While covered with a rag of course to block any spray going all over.

Holy cow the pump is hard to get out of it carrier, but I got it swapped.
Still haven't figured out how to place the assembly back in the tank. I plunked it on there and hooked it up just to test and it started right up.
So now my question is what's the trick to getting the assembly to sit I there right, because as it is the cover won't go back on because the pump is sitting high.

Don't know how I missed this, but I'm fairly close to you. I've also got a majority of the tools you'll need in my trunk. Can swing by after work if you need a hand.

Thanks for the offer, but I got it together shortly after I posted that. I'm back home i'm OKC now.
I'm still not positive I got the pump in the tank exactly right, but it's solid and not moving around. I'll probably open back up this weekend to make sure it is right. Should be easier with a nearly pty tank as apposed to the 3/4 it was at today.

So your fuel pump was the cause of all this?
Yep, all fuel pump. My guess is it was just barely working for the fewins where the car started sputtering and acting like limp mode. So it was starving for fuel, thus all the misfires codes. Why it threw the CPS code I'm not really sure, but whatever.
Thanks everyone for the help.
Saddly this has left me least excited about working on the project e30 I picked up last weekend. Somehow working on your daily driver is nowhere near as fun as your "fun car", and it's left me a bit spent feeling on that front, and the budget for that matter.

can i ask how many miles are on your car? Fuel pump failures do happen on the e39s but don't seem all that common.
Agreed.
Who knows about the cam sensor code. Might have been a 'rogue' code from the engine sputtering and misfiring due to low fuel, or, could have been an actual thing that needed replacing.
Errors w/ FP insertion are usually down to it getting tangled in its own wire/hoses, or, in sender gear. Good idea to go pull it apart again and try to ensure its all seated cleanly and nothing is hung up or pinching.

Yeah I plan on opening it back up this weekend to make sure the pump is in there right and the line isn't kinked up. Well it made the 3 hours drive home without issue, so I don't the line is currently kinked, but not sure if its really in the position it should be.
