The first of many posts i suspect...

    Hi all

Just bought my first E24 - 88 635csi in Lachs with grey leather (highline / shadowline) with original TRX wheels. Bit of an impulse purchase as i'd missed out on a couple of others - now wondering just what i've taken on! I had an E28 535i many years back that i cherished and always regretted letting it go to a mate for peanuts (particularly when he wrapped it round a tree some months later) but also always loved the coupe lines so couldn't resist the 6 when something came up locally within my (very) meagre budget.

I have a local garage (i'm in London UK btw) who are taking her in for an inspection / service / MOT on Friday so i'll get a rundown on the mechanicals then - she passed the last 3 tests without any issues and had a recent engine rebuild and brake overhaul so i'm hoping she's basically solid though has been sitting for a few months - basically needs recommissioning for regular use. Looks like some power steering fluid leaking (steering is lumpy) and idle is a bit erratic / runs very rich. There are plenty of body / interior / electricals for me to sort out too (passenger external door handle / lock don't work, sunroof doesn't move, rear windows don't move, front fogs not working, leather needs restoring, boot torsion bars have popped out etc etc). Lovely mix of damp and fuel smell in the cockpit and a puddle in the boot. She was crying out for some TLC...

Any and all tips on how to get started with this daunting task appreciated - also best source of spares / local specialists in London etc? Probably also need a virtual shoulder to cry on / therapy too.

    Cheers
    James

Thanks Jay - would you include the fuel system (i.e. draining the tank) in that list? On that note i'm a little concerned at rust on the seam of the tank behind the rear wheel - before the 535i I had an 82 520i and had to change the tank as the seam had started leaking, presumably years of muck being thrown off the wheel straight at it was more than it could take. The 535 seemed to have escaped the problem but being the same chassis i assume this is a problem on the 6 too?

Probably not, but its worth looking into the tank with a flashlight, thru the lift pump access hole.
