Were E30s undercoated from the factory?

My 91' 318IS has what looks like beige/yellow colored undercoating all over the underside. It doesn't look like the typical rubbery stuff that you can get at parts stores but a harder almost permanent rocker guard which has clean cut off lines in spots like it was taped off in areas when it was sprayed. I was curious if this is something that was done at the factory or someone had it sprayed afterwards?

I do know that the cats were sprayed with cosmoline to protect against rust and salt because they were shipped from Germany.
I know my 325 has undercoating as well but I have began to spray more as I replace parts and such to keep it from rusting down the road later. That undercoat is 30 plus years old now so I would imagine it's worn out by now.

Cosmoline is amazing crap. Get old? doubt it if after 30+ years? but wouldn't hurt to get a respray. But it did get sprayed from factory because at the time the cars were being shipped overseas from Germany plant. but as I understand it isn't available anymore from Germany. When I worked at bmw in the late 90's early 2000's it was still available from the dealership. it's pretty toxic crap and I think environmentally as well as personally they stopped making it available. it's the best stuff I believe still available for rust proofing.

I have some...expensive stuff...yeah similar but not as good. it washes off. LPS is designed for airline/aviation parts to keep them from freezing up.

That red 162 mile 323i E30 (which was for sale a while ago) also had the yellow underspray, with the comment that that was from factory IIRC.
    That's all I have.. :/

from what I've read it was factory undercoated. 3M body schutz is the stuff your looking for to match the OEM coating.

Jordan has a lot of threads about restoration of e30s over on r3v in the project forum if you wanna get sucked into that wormhole and forfeit any productivity for the next few weeks

I bought it amazon, with the special gun required to spray it, not too ridiculous pricing

Googling brought me to this thread and those pics pretty much look exactly like the stuff that's all over the underside of my car.

This makes me happy and sad at the same time. Happy because I know that my car wasn't undercoated with cheap crap after the factory and sad because I know that type of undercoating tends to trap moisture and rust from inside out. But I guess that's what I will have to use to match factory finish.

Was this also used on the lower portion of the rockers and rear bumper or was that something else?
