It is entirely possible my memory is faulty - the description of the code is what confused me.
There should absolutely be a way to test/activate the main fan.
If you don’t know the history of the cooling system then you are wise to consider a complete refresh.

I looked I am not finding a fan around the dme area. One thing I can say is I have been learning a lot with this car. I really think code was for radiator fan, can't test now. I can not emphasize how much information is on this site, I am impressed with information and the people that respond here. I also have 2010 vette (don't get a lot of help on forum) 2015 sierra not many problems
yup, e46 is a well known vehicle at this point. we know all its normal trouble areas.
pick up a bentley service manual and look into the local chapter of the BMW car club of america (BMW CCA).
given likely age/mileage - unless its been done recently, just plan on a cooling system refresh - hoses, water pump, thermostat, temp sensor, expansion tank, radiator, coolant. use only quality BMW parts (OE or OEM) - auto store parts are often a waste of time. bushings in front and rear suspension are another trouble spot.
these are easy cars to work on for most DIY'ers with any level of experience, but, there's also a lot of wrong, inaccurate, and incorrect information out there about BMWs.

The "E-Box" is the electronic box that is located next to your brake fluid reservoir. The E-39 has a fan in there, but the E-46 doesn't. And yes there is a spot in the Commands to turn on the fan thru INPA.
Just make sure you put in the BMW blue stuff please.

Blue stuff good. I don't know enough how to turn on fan with INPA. Can someone help please. I really think fan was not working, because it never turned on.
I read on another forum to unhook sensor at lower radiator hose that should turn on fan. It did not turn on, not at all sure it should work. The temp gauge was still working, they said it was for gauge. I guess I also need to get a fan this morning, blue stuff and hose.
01b6b854f279199945159a914336e98de68bd406b4.jpg Now I really need help DME has a bent pin. Have no idea how to fix. Will new DME need to be programmed to car? This is getting to be a night mere.
I like to use a needle nose pliers to fix that problem. I will go out to the garage and plug into the wagon to do the fan trick, as I cannot remember off the top of my head.
No, that lower hose trick will not turn the fan on. What will turn the fan on normally is having the A/C on and set to the lowest setting.

Okay, you will have to get into the DME, which you know how to do.
Press F6 "Activate"
Next F3 "Activate 3"
Then F3 again for E-Fan. A small box will appear, just punch something in say 50, and the fan should come on at 50%.

I received your PM. I see the pic, I will have to search to see what that pin does.
If needed, I can help you replace the DME easily, and not even that pricy. I would try straightening it first. If it breaks, it can be replaced. I have a spare MS43 on my desk.

yup, i'd try to carefully straighten the pin and i'd also check the connector to make sure there isn't something wedged in the there or some other type of pin fitment issue.

Ok pin looks broke, I have to got to go to work. Will any ms43 dme work?
work with abel (328 power 04) and he will get you set up with a DME. double check the connection side of the harness too...
'95 325iS - auto to manual swap done!
briefly on the ebox fan thing - according to the parts catalog, e46's did get an ebox fan. now, the catalog can be wrong - absolutely. that said, i did find references to US e46's having e-box fans.
not that it matters for this issue - but, i wanted to try and clear up some of my info....
whew! looks like my memory was only partially faulty - maybe....
'95 325iS - auto to manual swap done!
Yes and no. There is immobilizer function that has to be programmed. I can program it to my spare MS43 dme. It also has to be on a 325 flash for your engine and chassis
I will send instructions how to pull the immobilizer data, or just ship broken dme to me.
I can supply the used DME cheaply.

Rocket, please know that Abel (328 Power 04) is the best computer guy around, and you can trust him 100%. He has fixed MANY computer issues for me, and the shop I work for....and dealing with programming a used computer to run your car is not a problem for him. He's done this for me and my shop many times.
Let's hope your engine didn't overheat when the fan was disconnected.

The radiator fan is checked by the DME at start up. The DME controls the fan bus pulse width modulation (PWM). At start up the DME commands the fan to run at 20% speed for about 5 seconds.
Here’s the definitive document on the efan. It was written by a Canadian tech.

I am sending Able the dme. The pin I found bent appears to be for fan (mod 4 pin 4). This is just what I found, may or may not be correct. I had pulled dme to see if there was any thing under plugs, no water, but did find what looked like leave debris. Yes the plastic cover over the dme was on.
OK looking to see if anyone has replaced dme. Abel has reprogrammed new one. I have installed dme engine just cranks. I think I need to run EWS Start value synchronization program, I see Abel is off line. I know he would know, but I would like to get it up and running
I'm waiting for answers, before messing something up.
Yes, if you can go ahead and check the EWS to see if it is releasing the signal to start. Also you may have to clear codes out of the EWS as funny enough if it gets too many false Id's from the key, it will lock it out IIRC.

Fixed via remote log in to OPs computer.
Oddly the rolling codes in DME got mismatched to what ews module expected. A reset and sync got the car started.
I have only once before seen rolling code mismatch.

Thanks again Able. Now for next problem. Trying to refill antifreeze, have not had this before. The antifreeze is gurgling in reservoir. Any ideas?

System is not bleeding out air, I get a lot of steam.
You need to fill it when engine is cold, with engine off until it finishes burping it out of the bleeder screw (or open cap). Only then you should get engine warm. Then monitor it for the next few days as it's actively bleeding the small leftovers.
- - - Updated - - -
Otherwise you will introduce a lot of air into coolant paths.
