Hi all I have a 2004 X3 and I have noticed a humm that developed in the rear and has increased since. Now especially coasting at slow speeds it's a pretty noticeable vibration.
The tires are pretty new Michelins and it's much more pronounced when not under load which leads me to believe that it's a CV joint or something like that. But a precursory glance underneath did not reveal anything obvious.
So my questions are: is there a good way to test the rear CV joints?
Are the other suspects that come to my mind (drive shaft, differential) more likely than the CV joints?
And lastly if it's a cv joint, does it have to be replaced in pair or does it matter?
Any input would be highly appreciated!

If it changes pitch when turning left or right it more likely a wheel bearing, we rarely replace cv joints
I would have a shop dx the sound, don't want to waste a bunch of money replacing parts
