    2001 X5 engine replacement 3.0

    Just recently purchased a 2001 X5 3.0 w/ 138k miles that was burning coolant from No.3 and No.4 cylinders. The engine took about 5 hours to pull from the top as this was my 1st time doing a BMW. It's a very straightforward process and actually somewhat of a delight to work on a well engineered vehicle.

    140k miles from a 2002. All the plug wells were dry, runs smooth, quiet and most importantly all the coolant stays put now.

    One thing to note, on the 2002 engine harness there is an extra pigtail with a black wire/red tracer. It has its own single terminal connector, my 2001 did not have a provision for this plug. I left it hanging in the DME compartment, one day I'll find out what it's for.

    I even left the front diff attached to the oil pan when it came out. I wouldn't hesitate to do it this way again. Might be a different story on the V8.
