    Welcome to the Forum!

Yes, it will have a crank position sensor, and a identifier on the plug wires. The crank will be found on the right side of the motor as you sit in the car, or for you the driver's side.

What is the car doing, or not doing that is?

Yes, that would point to the Crank position sensor being bad. However the power for the coil is supplied by DME and so is the Ground IIRC. Also make sure all the fuses for the DME are clean and working, for that too will shut down any spark.

DME is BMWspeak for the engine computer. IIRC is an abbreviation for “if I recall correctly.”

Kids nowadays, they forget how to search...lol

You will need to get a multimeter to be able to test the crank position sensor.

Did you check the Fuses for the DME (Digital Motor Electronic), aka the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) for the motor?

Also what brand of CPS did you put in? I have seen cheap ones fail straight out of the box before.

I would check Fuse 10, and 11. Also check the Main Relay, for that too controls the power to the DME.

The fuse panel is located on the Left side of the vehicle, and should have a clear/blueish plastic cover.

Darin, does this engine have one CPS or two? My 325e had two: TDC and a CPS.

The M-40 only has one. Think of the Motoronic 1.1 DME, as it has 1 on the Hub and a reference on the spark plug wire.

O/T - This motor was the replacement for the M-10, however it fell short in a way. The timing belt blues plus quick wear-out on the cams didn't do this motor much justice. BMWNA didn't want another timing belt motor headache, so they pass and waited on the M-42 as that was a proper replacement for the M-10 IMO.

I would say yes, as water tends to mess up any electrical circuit.

You almost certainly have a large intake leak, or a sticking idle control valve.
