Just recently my instrument cluster is popping fuses, the tach, coolant temp and fuel gauge go out, sometimes the tach wildly pulsates with the fuel economy gauge. What the hell? There is a common thread judging from my research of Bimmer forums on the net. I noticed it’s happened to our cars as well. Has to be a common fix. I noticed that it popped today when I put my manual shifter in reverse or when doing nothing out of the ordinary other times. Pops fuses after parking and I don’t notice until I get back in car and start it. In the daytime with headlights off or on at night. Frustrated! My odometer is out (needs fixing) so now I REALLY have to guess fuel consumption

Anyone ever have this problem?
I don't think this is very common, which fuses are popping?
Number 10, now it pops as soon as I turn the car on
Check that the backup switch wires located under the shift boot are not chaffing against the body and shorting out.

I had a very similar problem not too long ago. I think I had a brief thread on it so you can search. Turns out there is some wiring next to or near the transmission that was rubbing?? and every time it makes contact, it causes a short in the system. I replaced the fuses three times before i took it in for repair. So have a look near the transmission shifter area for some exposed wiring. Good luck!
