    V10 s85 e31

I've been toying with the idea of buying an E60 M5 for a weekend toy. After test driving one, I loved the engine / 7 speed SMG setup but wasn't at all keen on the body.

I figure an E31 is a little lighter than an M5 and much better looking!

    Watch this space :-)

You're a real joy! It has been swapped but it would be a major PITA. Basically put an E31 shell on a complete E60! But it can be done if you have time and lots of $$$.

Go for it -- I love interesting swaps. It's the other end of the spectrum from what you're talking about, but I've said around here before that I'd probably enjoy an E31 with a modern straight-six turbodiesel more than I would enjoy a CSi.

    Cheers, John

Obviously he attempted a swap once and failed lol.

It won't be that difficult, I know some very good fabricators.. the electronics are no problem for me nor is any of the mechanical work.

    Omega,

It is because not everyone know the builds that you have done in the past. If anyone is going to do it, it is you! Subscribed.

:-)) true. I'm on the hunt for a complete car, preferably one that's had a shunt with a good engine and box. I'm going to need the SMG controller and engine DME/wiring...that's if I don't go the manual route and fit an E90 6 speed box.

    E31s85

Posted before, conversion done by Motorcade Motorsport. All pictures and videos are on their Facebook Page, the car sounds wonderful!

Not a simple conversion but they pulled it off. Subframe, chassis rails, strut towers, modified hood, this conversion is not for the faint of heart.

You can use the 6 speed gearbox from the M3, it is a direct fit, been there done that.

    Cheers!

...geez. Crazy build. What's left of the E31 is just its shell.

Looked through the rebuild pictures...wow! Not even going to guess how much that cost.

Weekend toy? Mine is my DD and it's a blast every single time I get behind the wheel! The looks of the vehicle will grow on you as it has me, as I am of the same opinion as you are, regarding its' exterior aesthetics.

    Nice job !! 👍🏻

I wouldnít change the e31 suspension though, itís actually a very good setup. Upgraded diff with LSD will support 500 HP all day . The engine bay/transmission tunnel will be a lot work though.

Maybe in silverstone blue, not at all keen on black ones...dark colours seem to hide all the M bulges 😀 . Have you had any issues with it ?

I picked it up about 15 months ago with only 52k miles on it from Chicago Motor Cars here in Las Vegas. They bought it at auction, so they didn't have any history on the vehicle other than a clean car fax. Because it was through a dealer, I was able to get a warranty as advised by my local independent shop. Even though the car has been solid it was and is a "piece of mind" price worth paying. I've had several oil changes with oil analysis on every change and no indications of rod bearing failure.

It's taken me a while to get accustom to the SMG. I've learned to accept it more since driving my son's e61 manual for a month as a DD. I love shifting it (M5) with the shifter or even more so with the paddles and not having to push in a third pedal.

Yeah I hear they have rod bearing issues but I wasn't sure if this was internet hype or not. Apparently BMW changed the big end shells for a revised version followed by a change in oil to 10w60. It seems that some rod journals have out of spec size bores.....bit of pot luck when it comes to mileage, some do 140,000 no problems whilst others barely make it to 50,000 miles. I think the only way to know for sure is to pull the sump off and measure everything then rebuild with suitably sized bearings.
