    Cluster failure

It seems the closer and closer I get to getting her ready for a cross country road trip the more failures I indure.

Today I started the car and all was dandy, I start driving down the road and my speedo doesn't work yet no trans prog. Then I notice the tach isn't nearly where it should be, I'm in 3rd gear at 500 rpm? I stop the car and restart it and at my usual 500 idle the tach says 100~.

My thought is VSS for the speedo but the tach? It still runs fine and started within the second like usual no hard cranking. I held the test button on the cluster and all the guages moved and responded.

Drive a bit longer, maybe the capacitors were almost at the end of their life, could recharge when you drive. Otherwise http://bmwe32.masscom.net/johan/dash...dash_caps.html
but yours is a 1994 model and the back plate of the cluster is a blue one, 9/90 -> end = Blue, code plug type is PIC 93C56 and size 2048 bytes, works with Self test + diagnosis via Modic. Code plug is standard EPROM

this one seldom fails compared to the grey back plate one or the blue one.
Another possibility could be a blown resistor in speedometer, see my website under fixes>>>>instruments>>>Replace blown resistor in speedometer
