    I'm back and headed to the track.

    Been at sea for almost three months. I'm headed to the track on the 12th. I have camber plates to install today to try an even up may tire wear. I'm also going to try and get my sport seat and headliner in before I go.

    I got about 5k out of my Nitto EVO's so I plan on upgrading to Continental extreme contact. I also want to get my 3.15 diff in. Are there any wrinkles besides nuts an bolts when I put the 3.15 in? The wheels will be spinning a t different ratio and I want to make sure the car won't go to shit on me.

    I'm also up for pads and rotors. ECS has a nice 750 upgrade kit that I'm looking at.

    I know this isn't really a race forum but I have decided to build out my 740 for some fun at the track. The M3 track car has been done once or twice. If and when the motor goes it will be time for an M5 power train. Any thoughts or tips would be great!

    I almost forgot. I have 20" staggered wheels and I'm thinking of going to 18" parallels for the track?

    Went out to the Ridge yesterday. It was wet and slippery for the first two runs, the ABS and DSC were saving my ass. The camber plates did there job and got the tire wear and traction off the side wall. Now the car tends to oversteer and the DSC shuts down the power right when you are smashing the gas to blast out of the corner. When I go back on a dry day I will shut off the DSC and see if I can finesse the car through the corners. I'll put some more camber in the rear and see if I can even my car out again. I'm quite sure BMW put more thought and money into their set up than I have. In spite of driving a living room as the guys at the track call it I can hold my own. The biggest thing that slows me down is a car in front of me, I brake way later and way harder than most other drivers.

    An extra 100hp would be nice but the real speed is in the corners. Nothing beats hearing and feeling that V8 push you up to 130mph in the straight. Then smashing the brakes almost into the ABS and taking the first turn at 100. After that its all about keeping the car balanced through the corners. When you get off the line the car is so heavy it gets way off the line and the DSC kicks in. After all of that excitement you switch the suspension back to normal and have a nice cruise home in a BMW flagship.

    Yeah 100hp more would be great im currently installing a supercharger on my v8 and after i intalled coilovers in my e38 it fo actually corner like a dream. If you want to see some lame clips of me drifting. Hit up Drifting Limousine on youtube where did you get camber plates?

    What a blast! We are living through you two guys racing our hobby cars for real. way cool. we'll need pics and vids though or you are both dreaming.. lol

    I'll check out drifting limo site though.

    keep us posted guys sounds like fun, that most of us wouldn't have the nerve to push our cars through.

    I got the camber plates off ebay for $100. They are the only version that will work with EDC. They cost $525 from KMAC.

    The sway bar looks like a great mod when I put in the 3.15 diff and bushings. I may just order a bigger one if I'm going to change it out but there is nothing better than budget mods. They strut brace is in the mail and from what I have read it makes a big difference on a 740.

    I'm already looking for my next track day. The SCCA tracks nights in America are definitely the best value.

    Does the seller have other camber plates or just the ones you bought? I would like to get a set especially at that price!

    KMAC has a few versions for E38's. They allow camber and caster adjustments while loaded. I had been shopping for awhile before these popped up on Ebay.

    I do not know what my settings are, I just installed them and went to the max camber. I'm going to watch the tires for now I have a steering tie bar to install to get rid of my shimmy. Reviewing the M3 track car thread you can run up to -2.5 camber without adverse tire wear on the street. Frankly going to the track is going to make the tires go so fast that I don't think it will matter. I'm not sure which will slow me down first the $200 tract fee's or the $1200 tire sets?

    Nice work sigzagg. I guess we share the same sentiment, do it with a car that no one suspects to be able to. I'm kind of doing the same thing but when I drift it's because I made a mistake setting up for the corner!

    The speed is not in the corners, despite what some people will say, until physics changes significantly. Roughly equivalent cars with comparable drivers will always be slave to the power-to-weight ratio: there is no way to make up in the corners what you lose in the straightaways unless there is a massive difference in cars or drivers - and even then, it's just a matter of how much you can compensate for. The limit on that, by the by, is pretty low, given that apex speed can vary by maybe 10-15%.. call it 20% in pretty extreme cases? Work out by how much that turbo just blew your doors off on a 1000' straightaway *and how much later he started braking*... that 10-15% won't help much. Yes, yes, I know, driver skill, etc. Great things to discuss at dinner after the event is over.
    With that said, congratulations for taking a 'living room' to the track. I would never be brave enough. And it's generally the tire sets

    He he thx. yeah i get a couple of weird looks when i go to the track. but it's pretty cool to see them after i go around the track . do you have a manual or automatic car?

    Hah hey thanks man! MONEY isn't the big deal, it's just the time/effort that is. The materials cost is probably $80-90 total, call it 5-6 hours work to build one. The effort was designing it, cutting the bumper, actually wrestling with the material to shape it, etc.. it's not something I ever want to do again, not for $5000. I'm not very money motivated, always let people down that way haha.

    Honestly though, if you want to try at it yourself, I can send you whatever pictures/renderings you want! I love that you're doing this with your car, the purests must be dying though!

    As I was test fitting/building - you can see where I planned on mounting it to the underside of the spare tire well.

    Cutout on the actual bumper to make it fit right - very limited room under there, so it can't be too crazy without being slammed on the ground.

    Wanted it to be aggressive in and your face, but still follow similar lines to the trunk area etc.. Also take note, I am able to place the jack centered on the car, didn't put a "middle" strake

    I cut the bumper to that specific height so that I could mount the diffuser to the aluminum structure of the bumper, making a VERY solid mount

    Again, a big part of it was overall design itself. I went through version after version after version in 3D and in Photoshop before I settled on it! Here's concept to reality:

    Because there is no physical bodywork to the bumper itself, it makes it very easy to remove it from the car! (this is before it got paint)

    For you guys looking for rear sway bar - I had the 13mm rough surface Eur bar mounted on my '01 sport.....decided I wanted a little more, picked up a e39 M5 bar. This does have slight interference at the ends so I heated it carefully and slowly bent it out slightly on both ends to match the Euro bar and installed it about 6-8 months ago. I like the difference and have had no adverse effects from heating so far. All Good!!!
