    Serious intake question

If I put on a short ram intake on my 01 740il for an 829mile road trip would it confuse my computer or would it be fine now let me State I’m not looking for power as my car is stock it’s no race car I’m looking for the sound and mileage benefits or would I be best leaving it completely stock? Thanks for replying!

You're better off keeping the stock filter. I have the e39 540 AFE modified intake on mine but did a few things along with a tune for full benefit. Simply putting the filter on there won't yield you any benefit and depending on the type of filter you install, if it doesn't have a shield, you'll just be sucking in hot air from the engine bay.

I have a sheild made already im just looing for even a slight benefit to it would i end up losing gas mileage do you think? i am curious because i once had a car that lost a significant amount of mileage due to a cai but have had better with short rams.

I've run a short ram for years and it makes absolutely no difference except for a nice sound. I just wouldn't run the oiled filters because it's unclear whether they foul the MAF or not - it's just unnecessary.

No difference other than sound. Good that you have a heat shield already.

well works for me i love intake sound actually more than exhaust these days! plus dont hear them much in city driving so win win for my neighbors haha

also i agree with you on the dry filters as i had issues on my 95 yukon i used oiled k&n and they dirtied my maf sensor really bad had to clean 3 times in a year we had a dry season i thought it would be better but i was wrong i also kept my filters very clean but its a long process with oil filters in the first place.

secondary air pump hose doesn't have to be hooked up. I was told it's only for initial startup/cold start so unless your state requires cold start, it's unnecessary.

The secondary air pump runs at start up to reduce emissions.

Air intakes have been discussed many times and the consenus has been that the original intake is pretty well designed, as it takes in air from outside the engine bay. The colder the intake air the better for mpg

With the air pump not hooked up and a small filter on it will it throw a code? Or do I block it off?

Unless you live in a dusty area and or your engine is really dirty, a breather filter is unnecessary. You can just leave the hose going into the intake box disconnected/uncapped. It won't serve a purpose but it also won't throw a code.

so the reason i had bad readings was from my MAF sensor failing I replaced it about four days after that (post) I can say the sounds from the intake are glorious, exactly what i was hoping for!

Also with secondary air pump disconnected it does throw a code.
