2 months ago I replaced the oil filter seal and the double vanos seals as well as the exhaust cam sensor on my wife’s 02 325i Wagon. All went seemingly without a hitch.
Now she gets P0014 which translates into DTC Code 68-vanos exhaust camshaft end position not reached
I originally replaced the camshaft sensor with an aftermarket sensor (against common advice) but it cleared the code and she had noticeably improved performance so I was satisfied. Recently the vanos exhaust camshaft end position not reached message re-appeared so I exchanged the sensor for a new new one-Venmo I believe is the brand.
After replacement the code cleared and the performance was back. My wife drove it 30-40 miles with no codes, no issues.
However, last Pm the vanos exhaust camshaft end position not reached code returned but she said the performance still seemed ok.
My original concern was that the vanos seal replacement had gone wrong but the immediate performance improvement after changing out the sensor makes me think that the seals are functioning OK and it’s still a sensor issue. After all, these are aftermarket ones.
One question I have is whether I should have disconnected the battery to do the sensor-I did not.
Any troubleshooting tips or advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Replace the sensor with OEM.
