I've been hunting for a nice e36 for a long while now. I've driven a couple of thousand miles to look at "cream puffs" all owned by absolutely brilliant photographers. Most of them were 50' cars at best. or they were just overpriced.
There are 2 on my radar now, they are both 2-3hours away from me.
My end goal is a nice, comfortable driver. I will bost the car soon after buying it. I want to make it very reliable and well sorted. Once the OE engine fails I plan on replacing it with a mild 6.0 LQ4.
First up is this.
1996 328i 5-speed drophead. 174K. I am waiting for a call from the owner
Asking price is $3200
As you can see it needs rear seat leathers.

This will be my first BMW. I really dont know much about them, so please feel free to point out the good and bad of each car and my intended usage.
The both need new leathers. My first choice would be the coupe, but I havent had a drophead for many years and I kinda want one again
Update.
The vert owner and I just talked. powertop doesn't work (that sounds expensive) he says he just does it manually. Needs front pads (not a big deal) Tires are fair. But then he said the bad thing words. the ones I don't want to hear. A quarter sized rust hole on the rear fender. I really hate rust.
