Man those bolt holes look remarkably close to the OE ones

Close, but it's not going to happen without some kind of adapter ring. The top bolts by the head are like 10mm further apart and the others are shifted a few millimeters here and there.

I tried bolting up an N54 6-speed transmission to an S52 and it wasn't going to happen. I think 2 bolts was all that would line up and I just wouldn't feel comfortable with that.

I also bought a ZHP 6-speed and it bolts right up but they are not as plentiful and are rated lower than the N54 transmissions (but still stronger than the E46 M3 6-speeds).

    GS6-37 from E46 330i (or maybe Z4 3.0) is rated at 370NM, less than Getrag 420G from E46 M3 that is rated at 420NM.

Regardless of what the rating is, Jim Blanton and others have said it's a stronger and more reliable transmission. Endurance race teams have pulled the 420G from their cars and installed the ZF GS6-37 because it's that much better of a transmission. ZF licensed Getrag to make the GS6-37 trans as well. The only downside is clutch availability and rarity compared to other 6-speeds.

N54 trans whoops them all, so that's where I'll be headed one of these days.

Likewise, go find a 420g for under 1000$. They are insane right now and for good reason... it only came in the M3 pretty much. Now as long as that nice shiney chunk of billet machined on the local VMC does not cost us 1k$ or more like every other BMW taxxed part

This whole swap kit will cost less than a 420g and a 1000tq clutch. I really should post some pricing.. just want to make sure everything is 100% before I get anyone too excited.

Whats the length difference between the 420g and the ZF GS6-37?

Looking to see if I can still use my DSS 420g DS

I think it’s going to be really close, without measuring the 420 personally I cannot tell you exactly. I’ll get under the e46 later and take a measurement.

This is going to sound lame for the FI section, but what about someone that wants a 6sp for stock power levels, with room to maybe going turbo in the future? Since you mentioned the ZHP trans isn't that easy to find, could different clutches be applied?

Yeah I can do an organic clutch pack for you.

Just out of curiousity you mentioned the autos in the E90 dont totally suck. I have never considered an auto before so I dont follow them normally. Are all the autos in the platform not that bad or is it only true of the ones that are the “sport” or behind the 335s. Not sure if there is any difference between them even.

I figure others may be interested too so thought I would ask!

Yeah the 6hp is pretty stout. There’s a few capacities 19/21/26.

I have a buddy that’s a transmission calibration engineer and we have discussed how to implement this transmission from an electronics perspective.

It’s the next stage of this project. A cheap automatic trans swap that will cover 700whp. I think I have EMC convinced to buy one and be my guinea pig.

On some other fun news the aluminum guibo from the F series and other 2011+ cars will work with this swap.

It’s probably lighter as well. Is it the same bolt pattern as ours?

Its 105mm, our factory is 96mm. It will work with this 6s swap!

Other fun news is the 335i driveshaft is the same diameter on the thick part.

Sorry if I missed it, but is there a certain DSS driveshaft that'll work perfectly with this?
