Big Power Manual Transmission (S6-53) Swap

Check Post #130 for Group buy and final kit details.

    Kit available here: https://22rpd.com/shop/product/34

    ---

We have been working on swapping in a S6-53 for a minute now and I think its time to share.. We have all the parts in production and will be testing this whole kit out soon.

    Background, What is the S6-53?
[INDENT]In short its the most stout manual transmission produced by ZF. It's rated for roughly twice what the S5-31(zf320 that comes stock in the e36 328/M3) is rated for and 20% more than what the 420g is rated for. The transmission is used in many modern (HEAVY, TORQUEY) bmw's (e9x, f13, e64, etc) and is very available at the junkyard, and will be for years. This transmission was sold to BMW and bmw created variants for different model lines. This transmission is now being used in many swaps because of its reliability above 1000whp; There are kits for LS's, Diesels, etc. The transmissions are so plentiful, we paid $280 for our test box with

    Interested in this for sure.

Ive been contemplating swapping my 420g setup into my auto m3 and go to something more durable like this. More affordable to replace as needed...

Why do you need an adapter ring? As I understand it, the N5x bolt pattern is the same as the M5x.

Unfortunately it’s not, wish I could’ve skipped that step.

I wonder if the same ring would work/be needed for a DCT swap for an M5x

That won't happen. 210 diff is 30 something years old. Plenty of these boxes to go around as said by OP. Awesome, should be a somewhat affordable kit.

Shooot... I would consider this just because it would be a smoother shifting transmission over what we currently have. Plus the 6th gear aspect plus the cost. Only thing I dislike is having to change out clutches since I just bought one not too long ago.

Haha I dont have an accurate 420g weight or I would have added it :p

Is a monster in comparison to the zf320. 5” longer, probably 25% thicker. You guys should see the gears in these guys, they are twice as wide...

    Yeah that’s kinda the thought..

Also opens up the 6hp21 for a ?700whp? cheap auto transmission.. probably good for 95% of all builds here.

The 45lb extra is at least in a decent spot in the car. I don't think anyone would use this kit for anything other than high HP strength anyways

Not asking to get spoon fed but what would be a decent solution for the driveshaft? Local shops or something similar? Possible to shorten the stock one?

You could shorten the stock one ~5.625” but the guibo is larger so you’ll also need a 105-96mm guibo adapter.

Im ordering a 335 driveshaft in hopes the front half will fit on the e36 rear to test out the kit. I eventually would like to have a 3.5” aluminum shaft built with machined adapter disks for the ends.

When I went to a 6 spd, I had a few local shops not want to touch the two pieces driveshaft. I had to send it out to get cut and even the shop I sent it too didn't want to touch a 2pc for the same price I got charged (It was pretty cheap around $100-150).
