Read lots of posts trying to clear a p0014 that popped up Friday but not ready to start trying to resolve yet. Most posts settle on two culprits- bad exhaust position sensor or bad or stuck vanous piston.
120 days ago I replaced the sensor for a different code and it took care of the problem. 90 days ago I replaced the venous seals and oil filter housing gasket and until 2 days ago all was well.
I have a c-110 scanner (son has it at school actually) but I hope it will be able to diagnose vanous operation without having to tear into it again.
Any reality advice on other culprits would be appreciated.

Remove and clean both Vanos solenoids, intake and exhaust.
If recommended oil change intervals, with quality oils,
have not been regularly performed, then that may be the cause.
For a good BMW scan tool,I feel you have 3 options:
- Foxwell nt510:http://www.foxwelltool.com/wholesale...e-and-obd.html
- Carly for BMW:http://www.mycarly.com/product/bmw-app/
- INPA software for BMW: Do a search on bimmerforums
Don't forget to purchase the recommended cables for your model BMW.
Any of these options is a major improvement over the generic P-code scan tool.
