Hi Everyone,
Due to my run-in tonight with a LS3 Swapped E30, I have the itch to junk my '95 7er's dying M62 V8 for an LSx + T56 combo.
It's super hard to find any information on a swap like this and want to know if any user on here has experience with doing such a swap, and if I could get recommendations for a shop to do the work, and or tips on how to do the swap myself.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know!!!
btw: sorry for my sloppy grammer, it's 1 AM and I'm tired.
I found a website that had a conversion for the e38 but my old phone died where I had it saved. Its not cheap and not complete but it had the mounts and maybe headers for it. Youd need to do a lot of wiring and programming though, along with custom driveshaft and many other similar stuff. A big pain is getting the dash gauges to work.
I found that 95 is the best for swap electrically, because it’s analog inputs for gauges and such, there are some that have figured out some of the can protocol but that is the hardest part of swap, communication. Check the e39 forum for swap been done a ton of times there.
Hopefully rvae34 will check in. He did this in an E39 which has to be a fairly similar swap.
I'm planning an LS swap now too. It's time to replace the timing chain guides and upper oil pan gasket on my 2001 M62TU... so might as well yank the engine and replace it with something smaller that I'm more familiar with.
I'm planning an aluminum 5.3L and 4L80E trans. I aim to figure out how to get the GM ECU to export CANbus signals to the gauge cluster, but I'm still driving my E38 at the moment so that progress is way off haha.
I also want to make super-low-profile block hugging mid-length headers to clear the steering box/shaft. It seems any E38 LS swap I can find a thread for is single-turbo'd, which doesn't help with ideas on driver side header fabrication/clearance.
Subscribed to this thread tho.
I have an e38 lq9 4l80e with BW s475. Has a new e39 custom wavetrack helical diff on the way right now. I’d post pics but it’s don’t have any links and it looks you you have to be a damn computer programmer to post them here.

Maybe this will work.

No step by step write up for the uninitiated Batman?
I’m new here. There is a bit of it on FB group e38 empire. I can do a little bit of a write up on it when I get some free time in next day or two. Not too much history on the e38 last swaps. I feel like mine will never really be done though. I guess that’s the nature of hotrodding cars. Supposed to be getting my new custom e39 m5 wavetrack helical differential next week. I’m pretty stoked about that. Need to get it back on the dyno too so I can get it all turned up to 11.

An LS is more narrow than the M62, I would bet that you have an extra inch of clearance from the steering box. You could also bolt in an e39 6 cyl subframe and have rack an pinion. That would also allow you the use of a rear sump oil pan. Either way, I guess my point is that you probably don't have to compromise as much on header design as you think you will.
I used truck headers that I modified. You would be fine using them. The steering rack isn’t a problem.

He finally comes to the forums...
I have followed your 7 on youtube/insta/facebook wherever it pops up
nice swap I haven't been able to figure out what transmission you used though

I like to pretend I know stuff
I know of a turbo LS swapped E65 here in South Florida.. never seen an E38 until now with that silver one posted here... that thing must drive like a bat out of hell.
Stancing is for drivers trapped in an abusive relationship of their own lives.
I used an autokraft oil pan on my e39 but no clue if necessary on the e38.
