    Schwaben Scan Tool

Has anyone tried the Schwaben Professional scan tool? How does it compare with other diagnostic systems using INPA, NCS Expert and DIS? Its only $164 and may have more features.

Been loving mine for the last two years in servicing my fleet. I don't think I've ever tried to connect it up to any of my E31s though.

Used it the other day to monitor tranny fluid temp while doing a fill on my E38. Reset plenty of airbag lights, oil service lights, CELs, O2 sensor troubleshooting, ABS module troubleshooting, camshaft position sensor troubleshooting, evaluating cars I'm interested in buying, helped a friend diagnose some electrical troubles with his S54 E30 M3 swap, the list goes on and on.

I have a laptop with INPA etc too, but I barely know how to do anything with it. I highly advise getting the Schwaben.

Is the Foxwell NT510 the same unit?

Shipping for the Schwaben is pricey from ECS Tuning to the UK...

Very likely so, as the firmware package you choose also has the BMW/MINI/Rolls-Royce option. Just make sure you get the round 20 pin adapter if you need that.

I purchased a Foxwell NT510 recently and with the 20 pin adapter it works great so far reading codes. I had to manually enter my vin and it read modules codes with no problem. I did not get a chance to see what else it can do?

Hope it works on all built years E31, we have discussed that in the E32 and E34 forum. Just for info on the Schwaben by Foxwell reader tool for use on pre-OBDII cars, comment from Greg: "This is a great tool, unfortunately, it does not work on my 1993 (1/93 build date). Since I have two OBD-2 BMW vehicles I plan to keep it. As this vehicle is pre-OBD2, I used the 20-pin adapter. The tool recognizes the car and displays the seven digit VIN so it appears to communicate with the ECU. It scans (both auto and separate systems) but most of the scan categories do not show codes or no codes and it simply displays a question mark. It did not recognize some major systems like the instrument panel and ABS and displays a message that the component is not recognized. Lastly, it does not enter the re-set mode to allow oil service updates, and it does not allow the removal of airbag fault codes. Bottom line: still looking for another tool for my E34."

I just received schwaben /fox well. BMW/mini 14020sch. It first tried reading the serial # on my 91 E31. Failed. I bought the car with a bad transmission. After replacing the transmission. Found car to what I believe from what I have read in “limp mode” only running on right bank. Have replaced injectors, plugs distributor cap and rotor. Weak spark, and raw gas in the exhaust. Any suggestions? Is there a good tutorial on using a scanner on an E31?

I have a Foxwell as well and the way it works for me is I need to use manual selection of the model (8 series) and then manually select the specific modules - DME/EML - those are the important ones that I am able to scan.

Clean your Throttle Bodies and Check that the MAF both work. Check all your spark plug wires and Coil wire for Continuity.

Before throwing more parts at the problem, I would recommend reading codes from the EML and DME to figure out what the problem is.

Like I said above don't worry about reading the serial number/VIN of the car - that didn't work for me either but I was able to manually get to the menu to read the DME's and EML and use the error codes reported but those modules.
