Had a 2000 BMW 540i and the engine went due to a neglected chain guide. I'm worried that I would be throwing money into a pit by buying a new engine. Might have a hook up on a 2004 Volvo V70R. Should I sell the BMW for the Volvo, or stick with it?
Any input helps.
Is the engine completely ruined? If it still runs okay but has guide issues I'd just fix it. The problem is that if you sell it as-is you won't be able to get much more than $1000-$1500 depending on your local market. Only enthusiasts like me would care to buy a car with a busted engine, and we're usually cheapskates.

Engine's completely gone.
Rs are very nice cars, they have maintenance quirks like E39, but I prefer them actually. Don't forget about the timing gear like you did on this or else....
Buying a used engine, doing the guides and dropping it in is probably a $2-3k job.

And a Volvo just won't drive the same, it's still a FWD-biased car that's based on an economy car. Aside from a few of the modern Polestars, most Volvos weren't designed to be sporty fun cars, at least from what I've seen.
I'd say to just find a good condition M62tu for like $1000 or so, do the guides on that while it's out, and pop that engine in there. A shop might want a lot of money for it but if you can do it yourself or find a local enthusiast then it could be a lot cheaper.
