It’s finally warm enough and I was able to work on my 2001 M roadster that I purchased last November. Car been parked in the garage and just started regularly thought the winter. First thing was the oil. I just have one question. Oil filter that came with my Castrol 10-60 kit from ECS is MANN 926/4x. I looked on few websites and it looks like a match for s54 engine. However, it does not look like anything original one did and it wider diameter that it takes some force to stuff it in. When placing the top cover, there is about 1/16-1/8 gap. But tightening the screw obviously closes this gap. But I am not sure that is normal. I changed oil filters before, but never on a BMW. It was all American muscle and Japanese crotch rockets. Original filer did not seem to come out that far unless it just compresses and forms after sitting in there for months. Here is the new filter vs original. Can someone confirm that it’s correct filter or should I just stick with OEM?
Thank you.

It's the right one for your engine, but I prefer Mahle brand over the Mann in this situation.

Filters seem to be like oil in that everyone has their own opinion. The probable reason for the change in design is that they found a way to make it cheaper. I am sure there is a site on the web that will give test results for filtration, if you want to decide that way.
The filter is correct and many of us use Mann filters, it's certainly one of the BMW owners "accepted brands", if you will. The gap you find at the top when replacing the cover is normal and will close when you tighten the screw. As long as your cap is sealed and you have no leaks then you're good to go. Be sure you're replacing the o-rings and crush washers that come with the filter. A lot of people use the liquimoly "GT1" 10w60 as a lower cost alternative. They sell it is 5 liter jugs. Congrats on the new addition.

My Mahle filters come with two different size rubber o-rings that both go on the filter shaft, one large rubber o-ring that goes on the cap base, and one metal crush washer that goes on the drain plug.
BMW MOA 696, BMW CCA 1405
Is it really that confusing? The copper crush washer goes on the drain plug. The smaller silver on the filter cap bolt. Small o-ring on the bolt tip, large on the filter cap.

Well, I feel like an idiot now. It totally makes sense. It didn’t originally because .... drum roll... I used the dipstick vacuum extractor and totally forgot about the drain bolt. In my excuse, this is my first time working on such fine craftsmanship of a vehicle, BMW. Try changing oil filter in old Buick without popping your shoulder out of socket, I dare you. LOL. Now I know and I am glad that my common sense suggested to use correct washer.
Thanks!
