I am almost ready to install this engine into my 79 e21. The E21 mounts don't look like they'll line up with my 71 block. Do I need to make an adaptor bracket or use the early motor mounts? Any help would be appreciated. Jim
From the looks of it an early M10 won't match up to a E21 mounting bracket wise without some mods to the early M10 engine mount bracket or the E21 M10 mounting bracket. The E21 engine bosses for the mounting bracket are in a different location and the brackets are 4 hole jobs vs 2 hole for the early M10. Has anyone ever done this swap and how did you get the engine mounted if so? CXt0QctCQoWTFq4cgpExJg.jpgSE5X0FYJSkqjHzrgMIw5Pg.jpg th
the pic on the left is the early m10 block and the right pic is the m10 that currently resides in my E21 and is froze up solid.
It looks like 4 bolt holes for both blocks. Is that a hole in the block(where the 4 bolts go) on the engine stand?

Right side: You have to have the 3 hole steel bracket from a 77-78 E21.
Left side: your photo shows an early 2002 block that has the dipstick passing though where the E21 engine mount goes. There are no factory parts that will allow you to mount that engine and have a dipstick on it. I don't know what years, but some early 2002's also had 6 bolts for the flywheel instead of 8. You'd be wise to not use this engine in your car.
Layne,
Well that's bad news but solid advice. If I can't mount it there is no point. I'll go with plan B. Thanks Layne
