Will I damage my E46 if.....

I drive it without the Mass Airflow Sensor “plugged in?”
It runs like new when I unplug it.
Error codes indicate a bad sensor but changing it made no difference; sputters and chugs along when plugged in. A friend will help me look for other problems in a few weeks. The car is 17 years old and is kept for sentimental reasons. A dealer fix will probably cost a ton. Not a daily driver so increased fuel consumption is not an issue, just concerned about additional damage.
    Thank you,
    Jim

No, it won't damage the car. I've seen posts where owners had it unplugged for more than a year.

It will only make the car run rich, thus plugging up your cat.

So do yourself a favor, get the intake smoke tested, or do a visual test of that big black rubber boot after the MAF. I bet there is a rip/tear in that thing.

Not so fast. With the MAF unplugged, the DME will go into a default mode. Not necessarily rich or lean, just a default mode. But yes, do fix the problem that is causing the car to run poorly with the MAF plugged in.

Yes,it will cause damage-to your cat converter!
An intake leak is the most likely, caused by a crack in the rubber intake boot, or the associated hoses.
