My car has started to sound more like a carbed v8 then the inline 6. The car is running very rich and has gone through a quarter of a tank in 22 miles. I took it to a mechanic and could not find problem

You have a massive vacuum leak. Go to a real tech, a shop that specializes in euro cars preferably BMWs and request that they use a smoke machine to locate any vacuum leaks.
How much money are you intending to forward this way?

Get the intake smoke tested and find another shop who specialized in euro/BMW's. I have found that most "General Mechanics" get over their head with these cars.

You need a new mechanic
Apprentice w/#yrs. exp.
In what may be a quick fix,
Remove and squeeze rubber intake boot(#3)
to possibly reveal hidden cracks,
along with inspecting all associated intake vacuum hoses for cracks.
