Rear right speed sensor (1st code was 5F00, now showing 5E4A)

Copied across from E60 forum on the offchance it might get more views here, apologies if not allowed to

    Hi all,

I'd be grateful if anyone could share any knowledge of what the difference might be between the two codes please ..

The story so far - Get an ABS / DSC yellow warning triangle when driving, so pull codes and see 5F00 (Wheel-speed sensor, plausibility, rear right) and 5F70 (Engine management: interface) so checked wiring and applied WD40 as per the instructions that others have kindly provided on the forum. Cleared the codes and took it out to test following the work and get another ABS/DSC warning triangle, so pull the codes again and now get 5E4A (Wheel-speed sensor, plausibility, rear right) on its own.
It seems the WD40 and unplugging + replugging changed something, but what ??
Is it worth shelling out for a new sensor on the offchance ?

MOT is coming up soon so ...

    Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum. It is always to your advantage to post the production date of the car. The E60 changed a LOT, during it's tenure.

WD 40 is not a good electrical contact cleaner. In fact, it's terrible at this job. The very best is Wurth Electrical Contact Cleaner Oil, but CRC or other Electrical Contact Cleaners should be fine. WD-40 is best used as.....a Water Displacer, which is where that name came from.

All that said, yes, if I had a car come to me with those codes, the very first thing I'd do is order a new OE or OEM sensor.

Also please note that you'll need to clear codes from ALL the computers after replacement. The transmission, engine, ABS, and even the Kombi (cluster) will reset that code, if they're not also cleared.

Thanks for the reply. The vehicle is from 9/2003 and the codes were read and cleared using INPA. I've found a couple of spare 'pulse generators' so will swap the rear right out and report back.
