I purchased a 5hp24 out of a 2000 740i Sport about two years ago, that included the sifter and the transmission module that come with the sport models (my car is a 2001 740il sport)
Well last month my transmission went.
Now I hardly have any forward, reverse seams ok, codes scanned were
(#49 Gear Monitoring) and (#60 Selector Lever Position)
the last code #60 might explain why the car does not start in park some times but will start in neutral all the time, not sure if I am going to need an additional shifter cable etc.
So what I plan is to completely change the fluid on the 5hp24 trans including the fluid in the converter since its out of the car, then swap it over the fowling week.
It seams the 5hp24 does not take the same amount of fluid as the 5hp30 that is currently in my car, does anyone know the exact amount needed for the 5hp24 (best I found was 9.9 liters on some internet sites ???).
Also is there anything else that I should be doing wile I am swapping the trans ?
Also anything in the back of the engine that needs to be taking care of etc ?
And last, the best price for trans fluid and filter price ?
Thanks everyone.
Your car should already have a 5HP24 as all facelift 740s I believe got the 5HP24, so you should be fine swapping another 5HP24 in.
Also, the method for topping off fluid has been explained several times, do a quick search on e38.org
while you're in there, I'd recommend checking the torque converter, the rear engine main seal, trans input shaft seal and also any driveshaft components that need replacement like the flex disk or center support bearing.

The 740iL sport didn't have the same trans as the 740i sport. The sport package in the iL was a cosmetic option, it didn't have the performance pieces that the i sport came with. That being said the engine is the same so there should be no issues bolting the replacement trans to the iL.

Google perhaps? I'm not very well versed in torque converters, but you'll feel it while driving the car if it's going bad.
The 740i and 740il have the SAME transmission, the 5HP24. the difference in the sport transmission is that they get a higher stall torque converter which a number of guys on the forum here have swapped in to their non sport cars. Also the addition of a steptronic shifter which can be retrofitted. The transmission computers might also have a slight difference, but I'm not sure about that, but to be on the safe side, i would swap that in too.
The 5hp30 was last used on the e38 in 1997 models, your 2000 has a 5hp24 in it. If it did have a 5hp30 instead, you would also need new trans mounts and a new drive shaft since the hp30 is a larger and longer trans. The hp24, if it really is from another Sport, will directly bolt on. As long as you keep the TC from the sport and the EGS (module) from the sport, then it will work just fine in your iL.
Just for everyone's education, there are three versions of the 5hp24 in the e38.
1. Pre-facelift
2. Facelift (upgraded 1st gear drum and updated valve body)
3. Sport (same as facelift, but with a higher RPM TC and different EGS to run the new TC)
You can get a basic facelift hp24, swap in a sport TC and a sport EGS and you have a sport hp24, that's it. If you also want the steptronic, you'll need a new wiring harness for that.

OOPS, now I am not sure I have this harness, do you have a part number for this harness or does anyone have one laying around they may want to sell ?
Kouks, you mention I can just stick the torque converter in my original transmission.
Two questions, one are the gear racial different in the sport short wheelbase (I) vs long wheelbase (IL) ?
and also do I not want to be using the transmission that came out of a running car vs my transmission that is cooked and is currently in my car.
I do plan on changing the trans fluid completely on the one that is currently out of the car but not much more then that, maybe the front and rear seals.

The facelift 5hp24, Sport or standard, has the same core, there is no difference in the gear ratios or in the valve body. The TC is different and the EGS module is different. Its the EGS module that adjusts the gear ratios and shift points, using the higher rpm TC.
If your original trans is cooked, don't use it, just swap in the new one. The wiring harness is different on the 740i Sport to allow for the steptronic functions. The plugs are exactly the same as the standard so your current wiring harness will work just fine. You do not need to run the steptronic unless you want to. You can leave your original shifter in there, swap the trans and the EGS and it will run just fine, you just wont have the steptronic functions. If you want the steptronic functions, there is a different wiring harness required. However, I think its only one wire different and I remember seeing a thread some time ago about modifying a standard car to a steptronic, and it had the new wiring explained. You could just do that and add the new wire as per that thread, you'll have to search for it on the forums.

Thanks I will try to find that thread.
