Hi everyone,
my windshield washer fluid reservoir has a slow leak. I have determined that this leak is coming from the windshield washer pump grommet.
I replaced the grommet, but it's still leaking from the same location, imo it's not a great design for the windshield washer grommet. How do I go about fixing this? Is there a special way to install this grommet? An after market replacement that is better?
On a side note, I was made aware that the E39's have a screen/filter on the grommet itself, do the E38's have these too?
Not my picture, but picture for attention.
Thanks in advance.
Although it may appear that the grommet is leaking, the pump itself can leak at the seam and this is often misinterpreted as a grommet leak.

Likely having the same issue and it is a mofo to try and get the fender liner out every time to troubleshoot. I replaced all (I think)3 grommets, still had the leak. Took everything apart again and wrapped electrical tape around the pump nozzle a few times to add thickness and push the grommet outward and that helped, but still leaks. I didn't bother with it a 3rd time and just coded the damn thing out to stop giving me low level warnings... will get to this eventually but not high on the priority list. When I had the pump out, I didn't see any signs of cracks or anything that would lead me to believe it was the pump but it's unfortunately the next logical step. I can't recall if there are any hoses along the back side that could potentially leak as well.
What Timm says - Mine leaked and replacing the grommet only helped a little. Eventually the pump shorted out so I replaced the pump (~$12 @ FCP) and no more leaks.
The reservoir under the bonnet for the intensive fluid was suffers the same issue. Took me multiple tries to fix. I finished up finding a piece of very thin wall rubber tubing over the pump end lightly lubricated to it could be forced into position. I tried an E46 combined grommet and filter, but that was no better.
And yes, there is a filter fitted, but it usually falls off into the bottom of the reservoir when the pump is removed.
