Reverse is going out on Tranny!

Hey Fellas, I got a question, my reverse is going out on my 97 840ci trans. I did some research on Realoem and got the
item number and model number A5s440z. The model numbers are the same but the last four of the item numbers are
different. Is it possible to use a tranny from a 97 540i inside my 840ci if I match the production dates between the two?
Has anyone done this before and if so will the tranny mount and brace be a direct bolt up?

If it is anything like the ZF 5hp30 transmission in the 850, the last three of the model number on the tag much match. I think it has to do with the bell housing.

Yes, agree with Erich - the check-ball has worn to a point where it gets stuck in the oil passage!

Higgilo Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure but I figured if the last four numbers didn't match that something might be slightly different.
I'll continue to do a little more research before I commit.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

    The late model 840 (540 & 740 also) transmission is a 5HP24 (A5S440z).
    Not the same valve body.

actually does not matter, in general valve bodies need service, cleaning, replacement of wear parts, also on the 5HP24 transmissions we usually replace the balls, they are made of plastic too, there are filters/screens inside the valve body, small orifices, solenoid valves, all that http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Troubl...ch%20Guide.pdf
here pics what we find on 5HP, see the measurement of the old check ball in the 5HP24 http://e32b12.blogspot.com/search/label/5HP24
