I recently got INPA running on my laptop, "just in case." Turns out it was, "just in time."
The SRS light came last Thursday night. I read the error, "16 Analog Belt Drive," and reset it. It came back on on Sunday night - same error message. Searched this forum for a clue and found nothing. A broader Google search produced nothing that was very useful. A search of the wiring diagram which has served me well in the past produced no clue as to where or what the "belt drive" is. Could it be the "pyrotechnical belt tensioner?"
Has anybody seen this error and chased it down?
Have I stumped everyone?
Take apart the seat belt tensioner wiring connector and spray w contact cleaner. Reconnect and see if it will clear
Can you post some screenshots of your inpa? Or the part number of your airbag module? I searched through all the relevant airbag module DTC lists for E36 and none of them were anything close for code 16.

All I found that was even maybe slightly close is for MRS2 airbag module generation, code 16 in decimal = 10 in hex: "belt lock driver"

Here is a screen shot from INPA showing the error code 16 analog status belt lock driver (I missed the word "lock" in previous post):

I also used my old B800 SRS tool. That error code from table 2 was 10 - Seat Belt Buckle Switch - Driver. Now I think I understand, both codes point to the driver's side seat belt. I suspect the "10" code in the B800 tool is in hexadecimal = 16 decimal. Could it be dirt in the seatbelt latch or some connector in that system?

Correct on all accounts, and it's usually the connectors under the seat.
Disconnect the connector under the seat, spray some electronics cleaner in there, plug it back and clear the codes of the airbag module.
FYI: my INPA told me it was driver side seat belt. Didn't have any cleaner handy, so I just pulled it apart and pushed it back together firmly. It worked.
I hate it when I chase a thread like this and never see the solution, so I'm closing the loop:
I went so far as to find the wiring diagram and the specific connector that connects to the seat belt switch - a black 4 pin connector connected to three wires (BR/GN/WS, BL/VI/GE, & BR). I took it apart sprayed it with contact cleaner and reconnected. I also sprayed contact cleaner into the seat belt latch in the hope that I might clean the switch contacts should they be dirty. I reset the codes, and viola, problem solved.
Moisture + oxygen is a b!tch. Whenever I clean any of these contacts, I also add a dab of dielectric grease to hopefully eliminate the problem from ever occurring again. So far, batting 1000.
