    Rearview Mirror Repair

    I tried searching but didn't come up with anything useful. I knocked the rearview mirror loose yesterday, and am wondering if there are any specific products to use to glue it back into the windshield with besides some generic rv mirror glue?

    Thanks again,

    Vince

    Did you also knock off the piece that the mirror snaps onto on the windshield? If so, pop it off the mirror, and use rv mirror adhesive to re-affix. If not, and the mount is still on the windshield, just reinstall.

    Ditto...the mirror is mounted to a "button" that is adhered to the glass. If the button is still there...just turn the mirror at a 45° angle, then give it a quarter turn clockwise to lock the mirror into place on the button. The mirror is designed to dismount from the button when lightly bumped...this is to prevent the mirror from becoming an object one could be impaled on if in an accident:

    {removal instructions...a gentle bump toward the windshield}

    I'm interested in the same information as my M5 mirror is now about 80% black. I didn't realize there was a repair option and bought a new one a few days ago.

    Does anyone have M5 mirror removal instructions similar to those above? The last time this happened to me was an Audi A6. It leaked fluid (nasty stuff) on the seat and then the shop broke the windshield trying to dismount the mirror.

    My mirror looks like a yellow fluid leaked between two pieces of glass, that is the typical issue that happens to them. Never seen your issue where it got dark. There is a place that fixes and guaranties the work for right around a hundred dollars.

    +1, they do great work and can sometimes fix other issues with the mirror while they have it. Mine was missing the circuit board from inside the housing (assuming someone tried to repair it before and failed) and they had a spare and installed it, along with fixing the glass as well. Works great now.

    The rear view mirror removal is the same...DO NOT TWIST to remove...you undo the cover (#5) from around the base (the rain sensor)...then you gently bump the mirror toward the windshield & it should pop off the mounting button. If you twist it to remove...you could end up misaligning the springs in the base that secures the mirror. You don't want to make the mirror loose...so bump to remove...then turn 45° to remount as explained in instructions above.

    If you have rain sensing wipers or the covers (#5) around the base of your mirror...just undo the covers & you'll see the removal is the same as the mirrors without the large base:

    Wow man, thanks for that. All these years, I've been twisting it to remove, so that was only for installation! At least I never broke any of them.

    No problem. Probably 97% of the time twisting the mirror off would be okay...but then there will be that other 3% where the tension/spring mechanism in the mirror gets bent or out of alignment...then the mirror will keep falling off the mounting button because the "tension" isn't there to hold it securely. That's why I recommmend to just follow the instruction and "bump" the mirror to remove it.

    Thank you Dking for the mirror repair link and Qsilver7 for the removal guidance. I was in NE Indiana (Berne) last month. I've had this car about three months and hope to deal with the mirror and several other small things before returning there to visit family in mid-May.
