    Intake Manifold Removal?

    Hey,
I have a 95 540i about 129k. The car has a bit of a rough idle when cold, very smooth when up to temp. No CEL. The PO did the CCV fairly recently. I am thinking it is the intake gaskets. Thoughts?

Also, I am in the process of also doing valve cover gaskets, so I have some of that area apart. I have researched but cannot find a good tutorial on removing the manifold. Is there one around? It looks like it will be a bear.

    TIA, Mike

The toughest part of remove and replace M60 intake manifold is the ccv tube. Otherwise it's pretty straight forward. Intake gaskets are a known vacuum leaking point. I'd encourage replacing hold down spacers and grommets as the grommets compress and dry out and have less clamping force on manifold to heads.

When I did the job the hardest part was just getting the wiring ducts out of the way which is a little cumbersome for the first timer. I don't recall if the e34 has the coolant res on the firewall but if that's the case just unbolt it and remove the overflow (left hose) and the level sensor connector and set the res to the side to get the most room.

+1 to the above: straightforward, but expect a struggle from the wiring (especially where it connects to the injectors; you'll need a selection of pick tools to get the connectors loose) and the vent tube under the manifold. An unorthodox alternative might be to disconnect the engine harness from the e-box, leaving the wiring, fuel rail, and manifold assembled to each other.

This YouTube video does a pretty good job of showing the process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIUfEoYvtuo

When you have the intake off, be sure to replace the throttle body gasket and bolts (if they haven't be replaced yet with hex bolts). It's a whole lot easier than trying to do it later.
